Utilities Engineer

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Utilities, the Utilities Engineer supervises all activities pertaining to the operation of the Chilled Water Plants and supports other activities such as distribution systems to ensure safe and reliable operation of utilities serving the Virginia Tech campus. The Utilities Engineer will strive to ensure reliable operation of chilled water plants through development of sound business practices, appropriate procedures, routine maintenance, emergency maintenance, and other preventative maintenance. The incumbent in this position may also be assigned special projects in support of the Central Steam Plant and Virginia Tech Electric Service by the Senior Associate Director of Utilities. The Utilities Engineer will be responsible for all administrative functions, budgeting, and safe operation of the Chilled Water Plants, to include supervision of maintenance technicians. The incumbent will work to develop a collaborative relationship with other units within Facilities and with campus customers.

Required Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Engineering or related field; or Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field.
- Significant experience in a major utilities operation that includes operation of large chilled water plants.
- Experience at the management level with facilities management, budgeting, human resource management, fiscal administration, client management, and project planning. Experience should demonstrate knowledge of facilities services issues in a higher education or institutional setting.
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards relating to the operation of chilled water plants.
- Excellent communication skills including the ability to interact with a diverse customer base in a variety of settings.
- The incumbent must demonstrate a commitment to excellent service delivery to customers, administrators, colleagues, employees, students, and other constituent groups.
- Other qualifications include a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities; excellent leadership and delegations skills; ability to work effectively to achieve unit goals with minimal supervision and administrative support, and ability to function effectively on a team of peer professionals.
- Working knowledge of software such as WORD , EXCEL and POWER POINT .
- Must have a valid drivers' license.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional Engineer (PE).
- Experience with Instrumentation and Process Controls.
