Learning Disabilities Specialist


Brief Summary:

The Office of Accommodations and Accessibility invites applications for a full-time, 9-month Learning Disability Specialist to provide individual, comprehensive, academic support to students enrolled in the Learning Disability Support Program. The position works closely with Faculty, Parents, First Year Program Coordinators, Academic Advising, Writing Center, Math Lab, and Academic Support Services.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work individually with students to evaluate their learning abilities and provide appropriate academic support.
  • Work with students to design and implement individualized services and accommodations; provide appropriate auxiliary aids for students (interpreters, note takers, electronic books, assistive listening devices, etc.); maintain confidential files and records; refer students to other campus offices for additional support and assistance, i.e., the writing center, academic advising, and math lab; follow up on all referrals as appropriate.
  • Provide advising and counseling support to students, assisting them with course selection, registration, academic plans, and career decisions. Support them to work effectively with academic advisors and provide them with an understanding of all academic policies and procedures.
  • Advise students regarding self-advocacy and monitor student progress with regular consultation with them and the faculty as appropriate.
  • Review application materials and select students to be interviewed for the LD Support Program. Work with selection committee to determine which applicants will be offered acceptance to the program.
  • Work with students' faculty to provide guidance regarding techniques and methods to most effectively accommodate the student with a wide range of disabilities. Balance essential course requirements with students' rights and responsibilities.
  • Provide direct academic assistance with completion of assignments, editing of papers and research projects, clarifying course materials and assignments, and referring students to faculty, tutors, and other academic support offices as appropriate.
  • Teach students specific study skills and strategies that work most effectively with their needs.
  • Assist students with their transition to college including their social, emotional, and academic concerns.


Qualifications:

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Strong written and oral communication skills required. Demonstrated appreciation and knowledge of students with disabilities. Ability to assist students with social and emotional development as first year students. Knowledge of a wide range of medical, psychological, and educational documentation and ability to interpret that information. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Masters degree in Education, Special Education, Counseling, College Student Personnel, or related field. Experience working with adolescent or college aged students preferred. Background and experience in writing, editing, and researching college level papers and other written projects. Ability to provide emotional support for students struggling to adjust to college and refer to Counseling Services as appropriate. Must be able to communicate with and build positive relationships with all stakeholders including faculty, staff, students, and parents. Background in reading and literacy preferred. Computer competence required.
