Position Summary
The Colleges of Agriculture Natural Resources (CANR) and Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Michigan State University (MSU) seek an experienced individual to serve as their Director of Governmental Affairs and Stakeholder Relations. This position reports to the CANR (90%) and CVM (10%) deans with joint accountability to the Directors of MSU AgBioResearch (ABR) and MSU Extension (MSUE). and programmatic linkages to the MSU Vice President of Governmental Affairs.

Duties:

Regularly works closely with elected/appointed officials and their staff members, MSU governmental relations staff and administrators, and key stakeholders to advance the interests of MSU, especially as reflected in the missions of CANR, CVM, MSUE and ABR.

Specific responsibilities include:

Serve as a resource to members of the Michigan Legislature and Departments of State Government on the programs of the CANR, including MSU Extension and AgBioResearch budgets, and CVM.

Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with stakeholders in the food, agriculture and natural resource sectors in Michigan that will support the programs of CANR, MSUE, ABR and CVM.

Monitor legislative and policy related activity in the office of the Governor, House and Senate and Departments of state Government that impact programming of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Coordinate legislative efforts of CANR and CVM with the office of the MSU Vice President for Governmental Affairs.

Facilitate communications with CANR federal partners including MSU's Governmental Affairs Washington Office, Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU), entities within the US Department of Agriculture, USAID along with other funding agencies and members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation in support of the Colleges' programs. Provide coordination for Michigan's participation in the Council for Agricultural Research, Extension and Teaching (CARET) on a regional and national basis.

Develop and maintain knowledge of the research, Extension and academic programs and activities of the Colleges, and relationships with faculty, staff and leadership, to be positioned to share this information with the stakeholders of CANR, MSUE, ABR and CVM.

Assist and support MSU Extension leadership in the engagement with county and local funding challenges. Utilize and support the MSUE strategic connections platform to bolster local, state and federal level support including district MSU Extension councils and staff in-service training(s).

Provide staff support and coordination for the CANR involvement in the Council for Agriculture Research, Extension and Teaching (CARET) on a regional and national basis, the MSUE/ABR State Council and the CANR Stakeholder Advisory Council.

Minimum Requirements
The successful candidate will have a combination of a BS or BA degree and at least five years of practical experience, broadly applicable to managing stakeholder and governmental relations in the areas of agriculture, food, natural resources and/or veterinary medicine. Prior experience working with state and/or federal government elected and appointed officials is required, as is familiarity with key stakeholder groups in Michigan.
