Reporting Relationships

Reports to: Chief Academic Officer.

Supervision Exercised: Functional and administrative supervision is exercised over full-time and part-time faculty, exempt administrators/professionals, and non-exempt support staff.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer, the Vice President of Academic Affairs leads the College’s academic programs, both Liberal Arts & Sciences and Career and Technical Education programs, and supports efforts to enhance faculty excellence and innovation and the faculty’s assessment of student academic achievement. The Vice President of Academic Affairs contributes to the development and implementation of  Academic Planning; coordinates and supports the operational goals and objectives for assigned areas; participates in hiring, mentoring, supervising, and evaluating deans; serves as liaison to internal and external stakeholders for assigned areas, assuring development and on-going maintenance of key community relationships.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Related/other duties may be assigned.

 

  • Model and demonstrate leadership, integrity, and a commitment to student success.
  • Possess strong communication and collaborative leadership skills and engage faculty in decision-making.
  • With the CAO, contribute to articulating a shared vision, implementing change, and achieving results in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Serve on President’s Leadership Team and support other College officers in leading the College.
  • Foster and support the ongoing professional development of all staff in assigned areas.
  • Provide instructional leadership for faculty and staff of Academic Affairs.
  • Lead deans, academic chairs, and professional staff to provide effective oversight of academic areas.
  • Help to maintain a climate conducive to innovation and collaboration.
  • Support student outcomes assessment activities throughout the College.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity in hiring and in relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community.
  • Evaluate performance of academic administrators and support staff in assigned areas and make recommendations for retention and salary increments for staff.
  • Participate in reviewing curriculum, promoting instructional excellence, and maintaining academic integrity.
  • Recommend personnel for hire and assure the proper credentialing, preparation, and experience to deliver excellent instruction.
  • Assure the effective and efficient fiscal management of the division, including budget development, grant proposal review, and the accurate and timely submission of all fiscal reports.
  • Prepare, review, and manage budgets; supervise deans and engage faculty in formulating budgets.
  • Establish and maintain contacts with external agencies and state credentialing and licensing agencies, as needed.
  • Monitor faculty and staff to carry out their responsibilities to ensure adherence to institutional policies and procedures, as well as the faculty’s collective bargaining agreement.
  • Monitor standard operating procedures for expediting academic department/program activities, including schedule development, faculty and staff workloads and schedules, and catalog information.
  • Attend monthly division meetings if and when needed to provide an opportunity to promote discussion of academic issues.
  • Possess a working understanding of information system applications related to student information, finance, faculty, curriculum management and academic scheduling.
  • Maintain responsibility for the day-to-day operations of assigned areas.  
  • Work collaboratively with the Foundation Office regarding fundraising activities.
  • Related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral degree in an academic teaching discipline or other related area is preferred. Master’s degree plus additional graduate credit in teaching discipline and demonstrated scholarly interest and accomplishments required.  Successful teaching experience at the post-secondary level is required.  Experience at the chair or dean level or higher is required.  Experience in Career and Technical Education program(s) and experience in a community college setting is preferred.
