Director of Strategic Communications, University Libraries

Position Summary:
About University Libraries at Virginia Tech:
The University Libraries offers Virginia Tech's faculty, staff and students, as well as members of the broader community, leading programs in digital curation, research data management, technology development, informatics, scholarly communication, specialized hi-tech education and research spaces, educational content development, and digital literacies education. The Libraries make available over 2.5 million published titles and more than one million e-books. It manages the university faculty's and student's authored scholarship in the VTechWorks digital repository, their research data in the VTechData repository, and their educational materials in Odyssey, Virginia Tech's learning object repository. The Libraries are members of the Academic Preservation Trust, Association of Research Libraries, Center for Research Libraries, COAR (Confederation of Open Access Repositories), DuraSpace, Hathitrust Digital Library, Library Publishing Coalition, MetaArchive Cooperative, SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Program), and the Virtual Library of Virginia.
Chief objective of position:
Reporting to the Dean of University Libraries and the Assistant Vice President for University Relations, the Director of Strategic Communications will plan, execute, and evaluate a comprehensive communications and marketing program for University Libraries at Virginia Tech and align those activities with university-wide communications, marketing and branding initiatives.
The Director of Strategic Communications will have a strong record of progressive experience in today's communications fields, which includes evidence of strong writing and editing, interpersonal skills, presentation skills, and marketing skills; proficiency in using word processing; a strong understanding of branding principles; the use of the Internet as a medium of communication; and the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment. The director will work as a member of the University Libraries' advancement team to promote goals related to communications, fundraising, and alumni/community engagement.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree and relevant experience or master's degree.
- Demonstrated experience in communications or marketing and writing related content.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, execute, and evaluate a comprehensive communications program.
- Ability to define goals and objectives, identify target audiences, and develop and implement strategic plans to accomplish and measure progress towards communications goals.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a higher education, cultural, library, or non-profit environment.
- Demonstrated experience leading people, either as a supervisor, a colleague collaborating with others, or both.
- Experience with alumni/community engagement or development initiatives.
- Strong skills using technology in the workplace; familiarity with content management systems, web platforms, email management, data analytics, and social media competencies.
- Familiarity with design principles and creative communications.
