DeLuca Foundation Visiting Professorship for Innovations and New Knowledge in N

The School of Nursing at the University of Connecticut invites applications for the inaugural DeLuca Foundation Visiting Professorship at the rank of associate or full professor beginning in August 2018 for either a one- or two- year period, depending on the preference and/or availability of the successful candidate. Individuals who currently hold faculty appointments at other universities and who can plan a year-long sabbatical leave are encouraged to apply.

The University of Connecticut (UConn) is entering a transformational period of growth supported by the $1.7B Next Generation Connecticut ( http://nextgenct.uconn.edu/ ) and the $1B Bioscience Connecticut ( http://biosciencect.uchc.edu/ ) investments and a bold new Academic Plan: Path to Excellence ( http://issuu.com/uconnprovost/docs/academic-plan-single-hi-optimized_1 ). We are pleased to continue these investments by inviting applications for this visiting professorship in the School of Nursing.

UConn's School of Nursing is among the top 15% of nursing schools nationwide. It has 46 full time faculty members, 611 undergraduate and 216 graduate students, both DNP and PhD programs, and is actively engaged in research and clinical scholarship concerning pain management, correctional health, high risk infancy, and gerontology.

The School of Nursing's base is located on UConn's main campus in Storrs, a mixed suburban/rural setting in the rolling hills of eastern Connecticut. Storrs is less than 45 minutes from the capital city of Hartford with additional performing arts, museums, and fine restaurants. It lies approximately 2 hours by car from historic Boston, the seashores of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Cape Cod, and the Green Mountains of Vermont with excellent skiing. Direct bus service from the campus to New York City (approximately 3 hours away) is available on a daily basis. The climate is characterized by four full seasons and is especially beautiful in the fall. Connecticut has outstanding public schools and social services and is the home to multiple institutions of higher learning with national and international reputations.

Innovation and new knowledge supporting evidence-based practice are being integrated across the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral curricula in the School of Nursing. For example, at the undergraduate level, teams of students work throughout their senior year to invent devices that solve practical clinical problems, an effort that culminates in a "Shark Tank" event in which the teams present their inventions to a panel of external entrepreneurs and compete to be selected as "most likely to succeed." Immediate goals for expansion and integration of this initiative and long-term objectives for its fruition in nursing professionals who propose, lead, and effectively respond to new approaches to health care require development of a focused strategic plan. Through a generous gift from the DeLuca Foundation, the School seeks to hire a visiting professor who will lead the planning process.

The successful candidate will be directly accountable to the Dean of the School of Nursing. He/she will establish and lead a committee composed of faculty members, students, and external advisors to develop the strategic plan for innovation education, will manage the School's multiple academic activities that foster innovation praxis, will teach courses or present lectures related nursing innovation, will mentor individual students or student teams in innovation activities, and will fulfill the responsibilities of all faculty members to participate in the School's governance and administration. It is anticipated that the visiting professor will have a teaching commitment on the order of 3 credits per semester.

The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction and will also be expected to assist the University in its efforts to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups, to demonstrate through teaching, research/scholarship, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience, to integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools, and to provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • PhD in nursing or a related field (equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable)
  • Substantial record of outstanding work in health care innovation pertinent to nursing practice
  • Previous teaching experience in an institution of higher education
  • Substantial record of research or scholarship as evidenced by journal publications and presentations at national or international conferences
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal relationships strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Licensure as a registered nurse
  • History of obtaining funding for innovation development or implementation
  • Experience in teaching across all program levels (baccalaureate through doctoral)
  • Demonstrated experience in distance learning initiatives

Determination of academic rank will be based upon the successful candidate's history of external funding, record of peer reviewed publications, and reputation within the nursing profession.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This position is a full-time, one year (with the possibility of renewal for a second year), non-tenure track, 9 or 11-month appointment with a start date of August 2018. Rank, appointment months, and compensation package will be commensurate with background, qualifications, and experience. The successful candidate's primary appointment will be at the Storrs campus but the position may involve activity at UConn's regional campuses.
