Writing Success Specialist

The Writing Support Specialist is an integral part of the Academic Success Center (ASC) team at Kendall College. The mission of the ASC is to promote student success by supporting students in the pursuit of their academic and professional goals. Utilizing a student-centered approach, the ASC addresses students' diverse learning needs and works with students to develop their individual strengths and realize their academic potential. In doing so, the ASC staff encourages students to take an active role in their education and empowers students to become independent, lifelong learners.

The Writing Support Specialist's primary responsibility is to tutor students in the fundamental skills of writing. Tutoring occurs through one-on-one appointments and in small workshops utilizing various modes, including in-person, by phone, as well as via email and video conferencing software. Secondary responsibilities consists of teaching one course per quarter and collaborating with General Education and program instructors on ways to support students with their writing. In addition, the Writing Support Specialist will monitor and communicate the progress of students who are identified as below-level in their writing skills, contribute to the development and implementation of class-specific workshops, accurately track student tutoring usage, assist in creating web content to aid in student support, and engage in other strategic department projects as assigned by the Manager of the Academic Success Center. The Writing Support Specialist is also responsible for promoting ASC services at New Faculty Orientations, New Student Orientations, as well as college-wide Open Houses.

External Requirements
The ideal candidate will possess a Master's degree in Writing, English, Education, or a related field (advanced degree in progress will be considered) and five years of experience teaching and/or tutoring at the college or secondary level. Essential to this work is the ability to evaluate student needs and prioritize issues in learning and comprehension, to promote the habits of active learners in students, to offer supportive feedback and understand non-verbal cues, to reflect on and assess one's own instructional efficacy, and to collaborate and co-operate effectively with team members. Additional qualifications include the following:

Sensitivity, respect, and understanding for adult students, diverse populations, perspectives, and learning styles
A strong commitment to the role education plays in one's personal and communal transformation
The ability to build and maintain relationships with students, staff, and faculty
Effective teaching and public speaking skills
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
The ability to collaborate on and implement strategic planning initiatives for the department
An understanding of the diverse learning needs of students with disabilities, including how to support students with executive functioning challenges and writing anxiety
An interest in utilizing innovative teaching strategies in the classroom and remaining current with accepted and appropriate instructional practice and research
A teaching or tutoring philosophy that uses formative, interim, and summative assessments to document student progress and achievement, assesses student strengths and needs, and implements appropriate instruction to facilitate learning and growth
An understanding of college-readiness skills and how they impact student success
Adherence to student confidentiality
