Law Enforcement Officer

Job Description
The Law Enforcement Officer performs basic sworn law enforcement functions including, but not limited to, arresting and patrolling activities, investigating criminal activity and citizen complaints. Enforces state laws and university rules.

Required Qualifications
Must meet the requirements of chapter 943.13 F.S. and be currently Florida Law Enforcement Certified (have passed the state exam and certification is not inactive due to break in service), or currently enrolled in a Florida Public Service Academy (Police Academy) and will be eligible to take the Florida Law Enforcement exam upon successful completion.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must pass the ( PAT ) physical abilities timed test.
Must be available to work various shifts including day, afternoon, and night hours on a rotational basis in accordance with the school year or as the needs of the University dictates.

Preferred Qualifications
Associate's degree from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice or related field.
Experience in law enforcement within an educational institution or large municipal agency.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of laws, law enforcement principles, rules of evidence and investigative techniques.
Ability to follow orders, commands and specific instructions and procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
Ability to gather and organize legal evidence.
Ability to write reports and that convey details and important information.
Ability to provide legal depositions and testimony.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Skilled in the use of first aid procedures.
Skilled in completing accident and criminal investigations.
Skilled in providing protection services to individuals on campus.
Skilled in utilizing building security and lock systems.
Skilled in the operation of police equipment.

Salary Range
$18.63 - $19.59 hourly ($38,900 - $40,900 annual)

Job Duties

Essential Job Duties
•Performs basic sworn law enforcement functions including, but not limited to, arrest and patrol activities, investigation of criminal activity and of citizen complaints. Required to carry a firearm and other issued equipment.
•Enforces state laws and university rules.
•Performs patrol assignments in department vehicle, on bicycle or on foot as assigned.
•Checks buildings for security, fire and safety hazards.
•Investigates vehicular crashes, complaints and other incidents.
•Prepares and submits incident reports, activity reports, and crime reports.
•Issues parking and uniform traffic citations.
•Provides emergency medical care (first aid) to sick and injured persons.
•Functions as an information source for visitors.
•Performs escort duties.
•Controls and monitors traffic flow.
•Delivers messages related to university business as directed.
•Assists with inventory of department equipment and property.
•Performs crime prevention/community relations duties as directed.
•Participates in judicial proceedings as required or directed.
•Participates in the traffic appeals process as directed.
•Serves as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus including pre-storm preparation, post-storm clean-up and replacement of stored goods to ready campus for operation after a storm; or other services assigned.
•Inspects patrol vehicles for proper fluid levels, tire pressure and serviceability.
•Inspects patrol vehicles to insure the operability of emergency equipment (lights, siren, and spotlight).
•Maintains all issued equipment in a clean and serviceable condition.
•Works various shifts including day, afternoon, and night hours on a rotational basis in accordance with the school year or as the needs of the University dictates.

•Assists with administrative duties such as filing, issuing permits and parking decals, registering bicycles, dispatching of personnel and answering 911 and other telephone lines.

Special Instructions to Applicants
The written exam for qualified applicants will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at 8:30 am on the FGCU Campus. Eligible candidates will be contacted by Human Resources via email once the position closes.
Candidates must have a passing score of 70% or higher on the written exam. If a passing score is obtained, the candidate will be invited to participate in the Physical Abilities Test on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, which will consist of:
1. exiting a vehicle/opening a trunk;
2. running 220 yards;
3. completing an obstacle course;
4. dragging a 150 pound dummy;
5. obstacle course;
6. running 220 yards;
7. dry firing a weapon six times with each hand; and
8. placing items in a trunk/entering a vehicle.
Onsite interviews will be conducted on Thursday, August 3, 2017 for any applicants who successfully pass the written exam and Physical Abilities Test.
