Educational Teaching Specialist

Educational Teaching Specialist (Mathematics)

Grade: 31E

Grant Funded Position - Up to 8 Positions Available

Working under the direction of the Dean of the College of Education and Human Development and the Education Associate, Mathematics, Department of Education, the Educational Teaching Specialist of Middle School Mathematics has responsibility for working with school personnel in Delaware to design and implement comprehensive, school-based professional learning, mentoring, and instructional support to teachers. The Educational Teaching Specialist, Mathematics will provide guidance and implementation of standards-based curriculum, instruction, and professional development within his/her assigned school. The scope of work will require coordination and collaboration with the Department of Education, and school personnel.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design and provide professional development in middle school mathematics in consultation with school personnel with the identification of standards-aligned text resources and the creation of high quality unit/curriculum development.
  • Stay abreast of current and emerging research related to relevant content and pedagogy in mathematics instruction.
  • Collaborate with the Department of Education on mathematics-related activities.
  • Communicate CCSS content standards, outcomes and practice standards in mathematics to the school staff through leading job-embedded professional learning.
  • Communicate strategies that support the implementation of the CCSS-Math Content Standards and the Standards for Mathematical Practices.
  • Communicate strategies that support student's critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving acumen during mathematics instruction.
  • Assist with the development of strategies to increase mathematics achievement for all student groups working with PLCs and building leaders to address issues of equity and access.
  • Assist teachers with the analysis of student achievement data and adjust instruction based on the results.
  • Work collaboratively with school-based administration to implement the elements from the School Improvement Plan applicable to increasing student mathematics performance.
  • Design and provide professional development for teachers to accelerate students who are performing below grade level and provide resources for intervention and remediation.
  • Mentor/Coach novice mathematics teachers, including strategies such as modeling and co-teaching
  • Build and share high quality resources and professional learning.
  • Receive professional learning and engage in reflection and data review with the Education Associate (one day per week).
  • Gather and share evidence of impact of the above activities on teacher practice and student learning in their assigned school.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree and five years' experience working with curriculum, instruction, administration/leadership, mathematics education/leadership, and/or professional development experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification in secondary mathematics education. Successful mathematics teaching in a middle or high school classroom or similar experience.
  • Eligible for Delaware Educator Licensure and Certification as a Middle Level Mathematics Teacher or Secondary Mathematics Teacher.
  • Effective organization and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Credibility with teachers, school/district staff administration, DOE personnel, and national leaders.
  • Ability to provide professional development and technical guidance in integrating new strategies and techniques into the classroom.
  • Ability to problem solve, implement, and evaluate solutions.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of educational stakeholders internal and external to the University.
  • Computer skills with ability to write reports and prepare professional presentations.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Firm knowledge of national trends and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
  • Knowledge of national and international models of successful mathematics curricula.
  • Leadership experience with successful K-12 mathematics reform initiatives at the school, district, and/or statewide level.
