Overview

The Site Protection Department is a member of the Princeton University Facilities Organization. Our area of responsibility is to maintain, repair, test and inspect all Life Safety Systems on campus.

Reporting to the Site Protection Shop Supervisor. The Site Protection Mechanic will work on a 24 hour/7 day work schedule consisting of various shift times, providing around-the-clock campus-wide, initial responder service for emergency, urgent, and routine events related to life safety, access control and security systems. The position will also be the initial responder, providing multi-trades support, to a wide range of campus events during the shift.

Responsibilities

With a minimum of oversight, the position will perform the following duties. Assignments to other related maintenance tasks will be based on overall shop work load requirements.
  • Perform both preventive maintenance and regulatory compliance testing to campus life safety and facilities related systems. Includes responsibility to troubleshoot, maintain and provide repairs to life safety related systems, including fire alarms, fire suppression, access controls and others. Work independently from computerized maintenance-management system (Maximo CMMS) generated work orders.
  • Respond immediately to any emergency or urgent events involving fire alarms, fire suppression, life safety, access control, environmental and other facilities related events. Troubleshoot, provide emergency repairs, and coordinate response and related communications as needed.
  • Be the initial responder to facilities-related events of a routine nature as directed, and provide basic multi-trade services to the campus after normal University business hours. Make decisions regarding the need for additional skilled-trade intervention. Follow up on communication necessary to assure appropriate resolution of issues (use of Maximo CMMS).
  • Performs other duties as assigned, which may include, but are not limited to support of other trade shops as needed, overtime assignments and response to emergency repairs during off-schedule hours. A University cell phone and two-way radio are to be utilized at all times during working hours for communication purposes.

The Site Protection Mechanic is a facilities core essential position requiring the candidate to respond to campus emergencies regardless of whether the University has a delayed opening or is closed.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully the Mechanic must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be experienced in the construction or industrial maintenance trades with three (3) or more years experience beyond the completion of an apprenticeship or equivalent training, in one or more of the following fields: Fire alarm systems/security systems;Access Control and/or Locksmith;Fire Protection/Suppression Systems/Sprinkler Fitter.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of electrical circuits and electrical safe practices.
  • Must have the ability to interpret drawings and service manuals for equipment serviced.
  • Must have good knowledge of safe work practices and experience in the repair, modification and installation of electronic systems along with the ability to repair and maintain systems with minimal guidance.
  • Must have the ability and aptitude to develop a broad range of multi-trades skills in the areas of carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electric, and mechanical trades, etc., and the ability to investigate and resolve a full spectrum of building maintenance problems and emergency/urgent repair needs.
  • Must have the capability to be trained and become proficient in all technical areas of the position description.
  • Must be capable of performing all required coordination and communication efforts and performing the required record keeping.
  • Must possess computer literacy and have the ability to become proficient in the Maximo CMMS Software System.
  • Must have good communication skills to interact with customers, supervisors and colleagues, as well as the ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Must have a record of high dependability and have the capacity to work alone during evening hours.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to work independently on a fixed or rotating shift schedule.





PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • New Jersey licensed fire alarm technician or fire suppression mechanic through the Department of Community Affairs, or NICET certification.
  • Proficiency with access control software system.
  • Skilled trade experience in one or more of the following-- carpentry, plumbing, electrical or mechanical trades.

  • work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions;
  • Possess ability to work at heights, full range of body motions and physical agility, and ability to maintain balance
