CONTEXT OF THE JOB

The Department of Kinesiology & Applied Physiology (http://www.udel.edu/kaap) includes research disciplines in athletic training, applied physiology, biomechanics and motor control/neuroscience. It is comprised of 23 faculty, ~ 750 undergraduates pursuing a B.S. in Exercise Science or Athletic Training, and 40 graduate students pursuing an M.S. in Exercise Science, a Ph.D. in Biomechanics & Movement Sciences or a Ph.D. in Applied Physiology. The Department provides an environment that supports and fosters the development of productive, high-quality research programs. Doctoral programs within the Department were ranked 13th by the National Academy of Kinesiology in 2015. Annual research funding for the unit is approximately $5.8 million.

The NCAA-DoD Grand Alliance study will allow scientists to better understand the true natural history of concussion in athletes, and investigate the correlation between multidimensional predictor and outcome variables associated with SRC from a fully neuro biopsychosocial perspective. The full-time Research Associate (Concussion Research Coordinator) will directly contribute to the research at the University of Delaware (UD) site of this landmark study.

The goal of this study will be to collect baseline and post-concussion data on all 600+ NCAA varsity athletes. This new study will require significant knowledge and skills to develop protocols and standardization of large research studies. In addition, the RC must be able to interface with many varying levels of staff in the UD Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services, including the administrators, student-athletes, team physicians, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning staff, and coaches.

This is a temporary appointment, based on funding availability.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist with the development and testing of standardized protocols that will ensure data are efficiently and completely collected.
• Assist with development of procedures to ensure all NCAA student-athletes are approached and invited to participate in the study, and informed consent is obtained.
• Coordinate acquisition of data from student-athletes and administer any additional questionnaires or testing required.
• Manage data flow, including database development if necessary.
• Act as a liaison between the site-PIs and the UD Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services.
• Ensure that projects are executed successfully and completed within time frames to meet project objectives.
• Write and edit technical and progress reports for submission to funders.
• Meet with principal investigators on a regular basis and draft interim reports for funders to ensure that project is moving toward timely completion.
• Consult with site-PI's on appropriate management of problems and complications.
• Opportunity to be engaged in numerous ongoing concussion and repetitive head impact-related research studies based on qualifications, interest, and capabilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or other related field with two years' relevant experience with medical research.
• BOC certification and eligibility for Delaware licensure as an Athletic Trainer.
• Relevant Athletic Training clinical experience is recommended.
• Knowledge and understanding of experimental procedures and data collection, analysis, editing, validation, manipulation, and reduction.
• Knowledge of applicable legislation, standards, policies, and procedures pertaining to human subjects and clinical research preferred.
• Ability to analyze research methodology, protocol, and procedures and make recommendations for improvements and modifications.
• Ability to collaborate with research colleagues and positively contribute to a productive work environment in the Department, College, University and/or regional partners in the Delaware Health Science Alliance.
• Ability to collaborate with students, faculty and/or staff in a team environment.
• Effective communication, human relations, and listening skills.
• Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart information to a range of clientele.
• Interviewing and evaluation skills preferred.
