Assistant/Associate/Full Professor

Position Summary:
The Charles E. Via, Jr., Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ( CEE ) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Water Resources Engineering. The successful candidate will join the Environmental and Water Resources Engineering ( EWR ) faculty at the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory ( OWML ) in the National Capital Region ( NCR ) of Virginia and at the main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. The position is located at the OWML in Manassas, Virginia.
Areas of expertise sought include stormwater management, urban hydrology and related resiliency, and water supply and system management. We seek applicants with a fairly wide range of knowledge and abilities, along with a practical problem-solving and hands-on approach to studies ranging from flow measurement in streams and BMPs, to water quality monitoring in streams and reservoirs, to bench-scale experimentation, and to computer simulation. Applicants with additional research expertise and experience focusing on integrated field experiments, reservoir management, sensor networks, and watershed modeling in the built environment are particularly encouraged to apply.
The OWML is a fully-staffed lab (2 research associates, 6 lab and field specialists and 4 support staff in addition to the 3 faculty) and a locally-supported monitoring program with a well-instrumented network of automated gaging and sampling stations for the acquisition of hydrologic and water quality data in the 570-square-mile Occoquan watershed. The 1,700-acre Occoquan Reservoir is part of the drinking water supply for 1.7 million people and is recognized as a model for sustainable indirect potable reuse. The OWML has a 45-year history of conducting research related to urban hydrology, water quality monitoring, reservoir management, and water reuse in a major urbanizing watershed. The OWML also providing assistance to local entities such as water utilities, water reclamation facilities, and stormwater managers, including assessing the performance and application of BMPs.
The position will be filled at either the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank. A Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely-related discipline is required. Applicants from a range of engineering and science backgrounds will be considered depending on their areas of expertise. Preference will be given to candidates with proven leadership capabilities and an established record of teaching, research, outreach and scholarship. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in water resources engineering, supervise students, develop a sponsored research program, collaborate with other Virginia Tech faculty in the NCR and in Blacksburg, and contribute in service opportunities to the university and profession. The successful candidate will possess project management skills, an ability and desire to work in collaborative teams, a willingness to engage in a range of research areas related to the OWML mission, and integrate with and build upon the already-existing portfolio of research at the OWML , much of which is applied research devoted to a sustainable urban water cycle.

Required Qualifications:
-Doctoral degree in civil engineering or a closely related field
-Evidence of scholarship/research and record of external funding for research
-Effective communication skills
-Commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship and research
-demonstrated experience in project management and leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Post-doctoral experience or experience in a faculty position at the university level
-Experience in supervising graduate student research and theses
-Interest and experience working effectively with a diverse student population
-Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines
-Registration as a Professional Engineer and professional experience are desirable, but not required.
