College Information

New River Community College is a two-year state institution of higher education operating under a state-wide system of 23 community colleges. The college is located on a one-hundred plus acre site at the intersection of U.S. Routes 11 and 100 in Dublin, Virginia. The campus provides modern, well-equipped facilities for the vocational-technical programs as well as for the college parallel programs. Approximately 5,000 students comprise the student body.

Position Information

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in a related field with at least four years of progressive experience in a financial aid office. Position requires the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: ability to understand and relate the importance of the financial aid functions to the overall student success mission and philosophy; ability to work collaboratively with other student services offices to foster student access and promote financial aid educational programming which supports the college's enrollment and retention efforts; ability to provide leadership for the direction and delivery of all federal and state student financial aid programs; knowledge and understanding of and ability to maintain institutional compliance with all financial aid programs; ability to interpret financial aid policy and update the college on new financial aid guidelines as needed; ability to coordinate the formation and calculation of all award packages for eligible students; knowledge and management experience of all aspects of the Student Information System (SIS) financial aid module or similar systems; ability to promote the highest level of customer service for the financial aid office; ability to relate well with diverse student populations; knowledge and understanding of the socioeconomic barriers to high school and college completion; familiarity with curricular offerings and curricular trends; strong interpersonal skills to help engage, provide support, and motivate students and families; willingness to work at off-campus sites, including conducting presentations and workshops in regional high schools; effective problem-solving skills; strong presentation and facilitation skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills. A background investigation will be conducted on the selected candidate.

Preferred Qualifications:

Supervisory experience in a financial aid office. Recent experience in implementing state and federal financial aid policy. Experience working in a comprehensive community college setting. Understanding of the community college philosophy and mission.
 

Duties:

The financial aid director will provide leadership for all aspects of the delivery of federal and state financial aid programs and will ensure compliance in all aspects. The director must have a proven commitment to student success and must work effectively as a leader within the institution. The director must be able to perform duties which may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Organize, manage, and supervise the daily operations, procedures and staffing of the Financial Aid Office.
  • Coordinate and manage all financial aid programs, exercising professional judgment and ensuring consistency and compliance with all federal, state, and institutional financial aid regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure a high performance, customer service oriented work environment.
  • Monitor, approve, and/or revise all financial aid packaging for all qualified financial aid applicants in accordance with federal, state, and institutional policy.
  • Monitor satisfactory academic performance (SAP) of student financial aid recipients; apply warning, termination and Academic Progress Plan policies and procedures as applicable.
  • Administer the appeals process related to SAP and special circumstances appeals (dependency, Unusual Enrollment History, Selective Service, etc).
  • Ensure accountability and reconciliation of federal and state financial aid funds, including but not limited to Pell, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Work Study (FWS), Federal Direct Student Loans, VSFAP programs; and manage the Return of Title IV Funds ((R2T4) process.
  • Program, update and maintain setup for the Student Information System (PeopleSoft) and web applications used in student needs analysis, awards, and records.
  • Oversee and coordinate the student loan program.
  • Perform quality audits of work done to ensure accuracy and compliance with proper procedures.
  • Communicate information regarding changes in policy or procedures that may impact the institution's ability to participate in the Title IV Programs and the institution's fiscal liabilities as needed.
  • Account and report proper expenditures of financial aid funds.
  • Assist in preparing and monitoring the annual budget for financial aid allotments.
  • Research and approve expenditures for services, supplies and equipment according to established fiscal policies.
  • Ensure the maintenance of accurate financial aid records and files.
  • Monitor and review all third party vendors for performance and efficiency, including, but not limited to Default Management vendor and Blackboard Support Center.
  • Ensure Financial Aid Course Audit parameters are updated and accurate.
  • Work with Public Information Office and Media Services to develop, review, design, and update all publications related to financial aid (website, social media, handbook, correspondence, brochures, etc.).
  • Work with auditors to ensure compliance with all federal, state and college policies and procedures.
  • Assist/provide input on performance evaluations.
  • Make financial aid presentations and conduct workshops in regional high schools and at other community events for prospective students and their families.
  • Ensure assistance is provided to students and families with the financial aid process including completion of the FAFSA.
  • Collaborate with Educational Foundation for support of ACCE program and Foundation scholarships.
  • Assist with NRCC new student orientation sessions.
  • Provide reports to college as requested.
  • Maintain weekly office hours at the College's off-campus site in Christiansburg and ensure that appropriate and adequate financial aid support is provided at this site on an ongoing basis.
  • Work occasional evening and weekend hours as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Salary: Dependent on academic qualifications and previous work experience.
