Overview

The Senior Associate Dean creates and drives a strategic vision for international programs and experiential, immersive learning at Princeton. In collaboration with others in the Office of the Dean of the College and across the University, the Senior Associate Dean knits together the units within the Office of International Programs to develop a coherent, multifaceted approach to the international arc of undergraduate students' experience at Princeton; oversees the Community-Based Learning Initiative (CBLI) in its efforts to connect students' academic work with their interest in and concern for serving local, regional, national, and international communities; and collaborates with the Pace Center to enable the service and civic engagement mission of the University through the curriculum and immersive learning experiences.

Through Bridge Year placements, service-oriented coursework, community-engaged scholarship, immersive experiences on and off campus that provide new ways of learning, international summer internship experiences, semester-long study abroad opportunities, and post-graduate international fellowships, Princeton students have the potential to structure immersive international and domestic learning experiences as a wide platform in their college careers. The Senior Associate Dean helps articulate and execute a vision for this facet of Princeton's undergraduate education.

The dean works to build relationships among faculty and staff across offices; oversees the development of sound and rigorous immersive coursework; works closely with the Pace Center and its faculty advisory committee on the development of “S” (service) courses; works closely with the McGraw Center to facilitate service and international course design and pedagogy; and serves as the chief Office of the Dean of the College liaison to the Vice Provost for International Affairs and Operations.

The Senior Associate Dean oversees five direct reports, including the director of the Bridge Year Program; the director of the Study Abroad Program; the director of the International Internships Program; the director of the Fellowships Program; and the director of the Community-Based Learning Initiative. The Senior Associate Dean reports to the Dean of the College and sits on the Council for International Teaching and Research, the Service and Civic Engagement Steering Committee, and the Travel Oversight Group, as well as other committees.

Responsibilities

Oversee the management of international and experiential programs
  • Develop and articulate the international and experiential dimensions of the undergraduate academic and co-curricular program
  • Shape strategies for University-wide international programs and provide input on undergraduate academic policies
  • Create strategic initiatives to build student interest in international and immersive learning experiences domestically and abroad
  • Develop and oversee policies and procedures that adhere to best practices in the field, including policies for the health and safety of students traveling abroad with University support
  • Oversee Memos of Understanding (MOU) with international institutions
  • Maintain productive relationships with existing partner institutions and develop new partnerships with international academic and non-academic institutions to program superlative programming for Princeton students
  • Evaluate international programs through site visits
  • Build relationships with faculty and collaborate with them to develop international and immersive learning experiences for students through their courses
  • Collaborate with the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS) on the Global Seminar Program and other projects
  • Serve on the Council for International Teaching and Research (CITR), the Travel Oversight Group and on the governing boards of several organization including the Berlin Consortium for German Studies, Princeton in Africa, Princeton in Beijing, Princeton in Ishikawa, and other Princeton-affiliated or -based programs
  • Represent Princeton at professional meetings and actively participate in professional organizations in relevant fields

Direct the Management and Administration of the Office of International Programs
  • Directly supervise five directors, an executive assistant/office manager, a student systems manager, and a communication and outreach coordinator
  • Supervise the operating budget, program funding, and student funding awards totaling approximately $3 million
  • Work with the Development Office to develop and steward gifts and endowments to support international programs
  • Supervise the disbursal of funds for international student research travel
  • Oversee the production and communication international programing information including handbooks used by students and faculty about overseas programs, newsletter and web content.
  • Serve on the review committee to fund University-wide international initiatives, e.g., Global Scholars, Global Networks, and other projects
  • Develop and maintain analytics on undergraduate international programs

Qualifications
  • A PhD in a field offered at Princeton
  • Minimum ten years managing international programs in a university or college setting
  • Experience working with faculty to integrate curricular requirements into program offerings to help enhance the student experience
  • Willingness to travel and prior experience living or studying abroad preferred
  • Reading or speaking knowledge of foreign languages
