Overview

The Lewis Center for the Arts is seeking a Full Time Sound Engineer. The Sound Engineer is an integral part of the stage operations group. Reporting to the Lighting and Stage Supervisor, and working alongside our Theater Technician, the stage operations group is part of the larger Production team, which includes a Production Manager, Production Stage Manager, Technical Director, Costume Shop Manager and full shop staffs. The ideal candidate will organize, maintain, and operate the sound equipment in all spaces. They will be responsible for the strike, changeover, and set up of sound equipment for rehearsals, special events and performances. They will supervise and train casual labor and students on equipment operation, safety and run crew policies. In addition, they will mentor student sound designers throughout the design and tech process. The Sound Engineer will be onsite for all tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and performances. This is a full time, 10-month position with a comprehensive benefits package.

The Lewis Center for the Arts produces over 100 events every year, many of them under the Programs in Theater and Dance. Those two programs each produce between 10 and 12 productions annually that require a full production team to execute. In addition, The Lewis Center for the Arts is opening a new arts complex in the fall of 2017 and expanding our operations, performance spaces and staff. A 3,600-square-foot dance theater with flexible seating for up to 120 and a 3,600-square-foot black box theater with flexible seating for up to 150 will augment the existing 350 seat Berlind Theater. The new complex will also house acting studios, dance studios, a design studio, a lighting lab and a separate music wing. This expansion and addition of state of the art equipment and technology provides the opportunity for increased learning by our students as well as a great opportunity for the right individual to join our production team in a new and vital role.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the Sound Engineer for all musicals, plays and dance productions that require live mixing of wireless microphones and musicians in the Black Box Theater, Dance Theater, Berlind Theater and studios; Organize, maintain, and operate the sound equipment for all Theater and Dance Program spaces; Work load-ins, load-outs, tech rehearsals and show calls; Maintain drawings and paperwork for repertory sound plots; Maintain a strong working knowledge of all current theatrical technologies, with an emphasis on sound and video technologies; Advise on sound and video equipment systems maintenance, upgrades and capital improvements; Maintain good working relationships with vendors; Enforce safe work practices ensuring a safe working environment for all.
  

• Train and supervise casual hires and student crew on sound operation and run crew policies for all of our spaces; Cross train on lighting and A/V systems in order to operate lighting or video for shows and smaller events; Serve as the Sound Board Operator, Light Board Operator or Run Crew; Work closely with faculty, staff, guest artists and students of the Theater and Dance Departments to maintain the high standards that The Lewis Center is known for throughout the community.
  

• Work closely with students, faculty and guest artists on all aspects of the design process; Taking on a mentorship role with student sound designers.
  

Qualifications

• 3 - 5 years experience
• Broad working knowledge of all aspects of technical design and production.
• Specialized, hands-on knowledge of sound systems and equipment. Knowledge of A/V systems a plus. Demonstrated expertise in programming and trouble-shooting Yamaha CL series automated consoles, audio recording and engineering, with wired and wireless microphones. Specifically:
  • Yamaha CL1 and 3 mixing consoles, and CL Editor V4
  • Dante networks
  • AES67 devices
  • Shure ULXD4D protocols
  • Avid Pro Tools HD Thunderbolt audio recording
  • Newtek Tricaster 460 production switcher
  • Crestron control and presentation systems
• Proficient in live sound engineering for small and large productions in a variety of venues.
• Ability to operate, troubleshoot and maintain a variety of sound systems.
• Desire and ability to train on lighting, A/V and rigging systems as needed.
• Proven supervisory skills, strong communication and interpersonal skills, positive attitude, team player, collaboration skills, problem solving skills and a great sense of humor.
• Self-motivated, organized and detail oriented.
• Ability to make thoughtful and timely decisions responding to shifting priorities and challenges as they arise.
• Ability to meet deadlines and work in a fast paced environment.
• Ability to work a schedule that varies from week to week and includes nights and weekends
• Proficient in QLab, Vectorworks, Google Drive and Microsoft Office.
• BA/BS/BFA. MFA a plus.
• Touring experience and valid drivers license a plus.
• Teaching experience a plus.
