Job Summary
The Manager of Student Life’s primary responsibility is to establish, implement and maintain a co-curricular and extra-curricular agenda for Rock Valley College (RVC). This position serves as a liaison for Rock Valley College’s involved student population with College Administration. The Manger will develop a comprehensive leadership development program to positively influence students; this includes developing a vision for programming, services, and learning opportunities, promoting the personal development and engagement of a diverse student population. The Manager will also serve as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator.

As a member of the Student Life staff, this position may be involved with other areas of the Division of the Student Development, as part campus committees, hiring committees, and various campus-wide programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Related duties may be assigned.

Student Life

  • Develop, coordinate, and promote a comprehensive out-of-class program to ensure a balanced educational and social environment; Establish and implement effective strategies to increase and enhance student engagement.
  • Oversee the implementation and evaluation of annual goals, objectives related to leadership development and student activities. Continue the development and assessment of student life programming.
  • Serve as primary advisor to the Student Government Association & Campus Activities Board.
  • Represent the office at various community and/or college committees, and task forces; promoting existing and new opportunities and/or policies. Seek out opportunities for collaboration and maintain appropriate working partnerships, both within and outside the college community.
  • Coordinate the annual Campus Awards ceremony.
  • Oversee the operation of the online, interactive student engagement space, Org Sync. Work with key staff to coordinate meetings with campus services as needed.
  • Manage Student Life annual operating budgets; coordinate and produce special reports to include financial/budget reports, funding and/or operating proposals, and various cost/productivity analyses.
  • Work in conjunction with PAIC and Intercultural Student Services Office on increasing the student engagement and achievement opportunities for our Multi-cultural student population. (I.e. co-host Students of Color Summit, Student Diversity Council, etc.)
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate professional staff. Oversee work allocation, training, enforcement of internal procedures and controls, and problem resolution. Evaluate performance and make recommendations; motivate employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  • Research and stay current on higher education programs, trends, and issues with student engagement and success. Join professional associations and attend meetings and conferences as needed.
  • Based on student development theory, mentor/coach individual students and provide advice, training and assistance to student groups in such areas as organizational analysis, team building, strategic planning, leadership, time management, and problem resolution.
  • Meet with student club advisor‘s for problem solving, guidance, mediating, referrals and student club development. Design and/or host training sessions and seminars to improve their advising skills.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate student-focused leadership development programs & workshops that positively impact students in academic and work-related proficiencies. Seek to provide targeting leadership program opportunities for non-traditional and special populations.
  • Oversee the coordination of providing students (and faculty/staff) with opportunities to participate in volunteer, community service and service learning activities when applicable.
  • Develop, communicate, interpret and enforce appropriate policies and procedures for student life; including student activities and leadership development. Develop and maintain current operational procedure manuals for various programs and internal operations. Evaluate unit operations and develop systems to monitor progress and improve procedures.
  • Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings, as required.

Title IX Compliance

  • Continuously identify and integrate best practices in the Title IX investigation and case management process.
  • Meet regularly with the Title IX Coordinator, Vice President of Human Resources, and General Counsel to ensure that University policies, procedures, protocols and practices are in compliance with Title IX regulations.
  • Provide ongoing trainings about the sexual misconduct policy and Title IX process (involving students) to faculty, staff, and students in order to comply with OCR mandates.
  • Prepare semester and annual statistical reports on the number, nature and disposition of complaints. Identify patterns and make recommendations.
  • Conduct climate surveys to better understand how frequently students experience sexual assault.

Additional Duties

  • Assist with the development and implementation of educational outreach programs for the Dean of Students office. 
  • Must possess advanced verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must exercise advanced reasoning and mature critical and analytical thinking skills.
  • Model excellent customer service to students, faculty, administration, staff and others through all methods of contact.
  • Confidentiality and independent judgment are required.
  • Regular attendance is expected.
  • Using tact and courtesy, the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with persons contacted in the course of work.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to function independently as well as in a team; strong organizational and management skills; can prioritize and perform multiple task and meet deadlines.  Ability to foster a cooperative environment. Facilitate and exhibit best practices, compassion, and creative thinking when working with college community; specifically the student community. Ability to resolve conflicts, use judgment, discretion and decision making skills in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues. Knowledge of current and developing student retention issues, student development theory, and student personnel administration is desirable. Fluent in web-based communication is desirable. Minimum QualificationsMaster’s degree in Student Affairs,  Higher Education Leadership, Human Relations Communications, Psychology, or related field plus one year of experience in working with club/organization advisement, student programming, or event planning is necessary. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills also required. A demonstrated ability to work as a member of team is also required.  Must have a strong student service orientation and be able to work with diverse administrative and student populations. Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management. Strong organizational, oral and written skills are necessary. Experience in setting and evaluating goals, formulating policy, developing and implementing new strategies and procedures, and student/leadership development in a college/university setting or related area is desirable.  Experience in a community college setting is desirable. Successful candidate must have at least 20 hours of progressive training on Title IX regulations.

Work schedule/environment/physical demands

  • Primary schedule Monday through Friday, hours vary, with some evening, weekend hours, and overnight travel.
