Assistant HWS Athletic Trainer

The assistant athletic trainer works under the supervision of the Coordinator of Sports Medicine/ Head Athletic Trainer. The assistant athletic trainer is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation within the Colleges comprehensive sports medicine program. This staff member will share in the supervision and development of student aids; the coverage of team practices and contests; the communication between physicians, coaches and parents; and the computerized record keeping of injuries and treatment. Team travel, evening, and weekend work are required. Travel assignments to be assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Athletic Department support staff are expected to work in compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA, ECAC, Liberty League and other relevant governing bodies as they pertain to their positions. They are expected to be supportive of the HWS Compliance Coordinator and fully engaged in the Department’s compliance education program.

Specific Duties:

Care, Prevention and Rehabilitation of injuries:

  • Prevention of athletic injuries and illnesses
  • Evaluation of athletic injuries
  • Treatment of athletic injuries
  • Providing counseling and education to student athletes
  • Athletic training administrative duties
  • Assist with coordination and scheduling of medical coverage for home and away competitions
  • Supervision, education and recruitment of student aids
  • Recordkeeping and documentation
  • Work with doctors and other allied health professionals to deliver care to student athletes
  • Taping and bracing applications
  • Current certification in CPR for the professional rescuer and AED.

Supervision of practice and contests:

  • Attend and supervise those practices as directed by head athletic trainer.
  • Attend and supervise those contests (home and away) as directed by head athletic trainer.
  • Maintain communication during practice and contests with appropriate personnel (head athletic trainer, security, emergency vehicle group).

Management and development of student aids.

  • Work with head athletic trainer in the recruitment of student aids.
  • Assist in the training of these students to bring them to satisfactory levels of proficiency in first aid and basic athletic training skills.
  • Assist in the effective coordination of schedules for student aids in the coverage of practices and contests.

Injury/Treatment recording.

  • By computer, record day-to-day injury and treatments.
  • By computer, maintain individual student-athlete sports medicine record.
  • Record medical examination status of student-athletes and clear student-athletes with athletic department equipment personnel for participation.

Communication.

  • Establish and maintain effective communication with all staff members in the Hobart and William Smith departments.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with Colleges’ student health service network.
  • Follow-up communication on injured athletes with coaches and parents, if necessary.
  • Establish and maintain effective and professional communication with student-athletes under your care.

Professional Development.

  • Maintain certified athletic trainer classification with NATA.
  • Obtain athletic trainer certification and remain in good standing with the Board of Certification, inc.
  • Work to stay current with ever changing techniques in the field of athletic training.
  • Through increased knowledge, strive to continually improve the care of student-athletes.
  • Attend and participate in regional and national conferences as directed and approved by the head athletic trainer.

Miscellaneous.

  • Participate and assist in directing the drug and alcohol education program for the student-athletes.
  • Assist in the maintenance and inventory of athletic training supplies.
  • Participate in the planning of sports medicine needs.
  • Instruct the Athletic Training course (PEC 980) for 0.5 credit as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in appropriate area of specialization with professional experience in collegiate athletics. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC)
  • Eligible for New York State Athletic Training Certification/ Licensure
  • Familiarity with NCAA governing rules

This is a full-time, 10-month (mid-August to mid-June), benefits-eligible administrative salaried/exempt position. The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications.
