PT Hourly POOL - Instructional Aide (Special Education)


Definition

NOTE: This is an instructional support position. This is not a faculty position.
Coastline Community College Special Programs and Services for the Disabled offers specialized instruction to individuals who have an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), Intellectual Disability (ID), or in need of Adapted Fitness training. Applicants should be aware and have desire to work with adults who may have one or more of the following disabilities: physical, cognitive, intellectual, and/or psychological/psychiatric. These disabilities may range from mild to profoundly disabled.

Under the direction of the instructor, the instructional aide will assist students in the Special Education program in a variety of ways, dependent on the specific needs of the curriculum. Aides are expected to be actively involved in all levels of instruction.

Special Education classes provide specialized instruction to meet the educational needs and goals of our students. The Part-time, temporary hourly Instructional Aide will assist our students in one or more of the following programs:

Intellectual Disabilities (ID) Program:
College Program for adults with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities including Intellectual Disabilities and Autism.

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Program:
Program for adults who have sustained an acquired brain injury. Course work includes an emphasis on fundamental cognitive skills, critical thinking skills, memory compensation techniques, and psychosocial and transition issues.

Adaptive Fitness Program:
Program for adults with physical limitations to increase and maintain physical stamina and strength.

Examples of Duties:
a. Provides instructional support and assistance to faculty and students.
b. Supports discipline or department with specific subject matter knowledge.
c. Assists students individually or in small groups related to the assigned classroom curriculum.
d. Assists faculty in the preparation of instructional materials for the class; sets up and tears down classroom demonstrations and equipment.
e. Tracks, maintains, and monitors classroom inventory, tools, and equipment; advise faculty and/or division support related to classroom needs, service calls for repairs of tools and equipment or supply orders.
f. Provides students with assistance and training in the operation of various laboratory and classroom equipment, materials, and/or machinery.
g. Operates a variety of instructional classroom media and equipment.
h. Maintains administrative and student documents, records, logs, files and statistical information as assigned.
i. Performs other duties as assigned to accomplish the objectives of this temporary position.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
1. General terminology, techniques, equipment, materials, principles, theories, practices and procedures related to assigned subject areas.
2. Basic instructional concepts, practices, procedures and techniques used in assigned subject areas.
3. Student guidance principles and practices.
4. General student learning practices and strategies
5. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
6. Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
7. Operation of standard office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software.
8. Oral and written communication skills.
9. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
10. Record keeping and filing techniques.

Ability to:
11. Assist in the presentation of classroom materials.
12. Understand and perform duties as explained through written or verbal communication.
13. Maintain accurate records.
14. Work cooperatively with others.
15. Effectively assist students from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and ethnicities, including students for whom English is not their native language.

Education and Experience:
16. Graduation from high school supplemented by college level course work in assigned subject areas or one year of experience in a classroom as an aide or similar position. Examples of disciplines: Education, Social Work, Kinesiology, Psychology, Social Psychology, or any other related fields.
17. Or any combination of education and experience that would provide equivalent qualifications.

Physical Demands:
Must be able to function indoors in a classroom and/or laboratory environment and engaged in work of primarily a sedentary to moderately active nature and to perform the work with or without reasonable accommodation. Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to move to and sit at workstations for extended periods of time, present information on wall-mounted writing boards or the equivalent. Requires sufficient arm, hand, and finger dexterity in order to use a computer keyboard, audio-visual, and other media. Requires the ability to work in areas subject to exposure to risk of shock or exposure to apparatus or hazardous materials. Requires the intermittent ability to lift, pull, or push lightweight (up to 25 pounds) materials and equipment around classroom/laboratory environs and into and out of storage areas. Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one-on-one and small group settings, and distinguish sound prompts from equipment. Requires visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens and to observe students performing tests and assignments in classroom and laboratory settings.

Conditions of Employment

Employment is on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Short term/temporary assignments do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked, and are limited to 28 hours per week and not to exceed 160 days per year. The hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the Coordinator of the program.

This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. We accept applications all year long. Departments or Divisions will refer to the POOL of applications on file to fill temporary assignments as the need arises. (Applications will remain in the pool for one year.)
