PT Hourly POOL - Maintenance Worker


Definition

DEFINITION:
Under the general supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, to perform a wide variety of routine grounds keeping duties with only occasional instruction or assistance; and to perform related work as required. Assignments are short-term, temporary, and will not exceed 28 hours per week or 160 days per Fiscal Year.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Plant and cultivate trees, grass, flowers, and shrubs.
b. Maintain landscaped areas, cut and edge lawns and borders.
c. Rake leaves, sweep lawns, sidewalks, and related areas.
d. Prepare soil for various kinds of planting; seed new lawns.
e. Operate power lawn mowers, edgers, blowers, and sprayers.
f. Clean and repair fields and facilities following events.
g. Assist in moving and arranging furniture and equipment for special events.
h. May oversee the work of others on assigned projects.
i. May perform preventive maintenance on grounds equipment.
j. Replace and/or repair faulty drains, cracked sidewalks, and blacktop as necessary.
k. Operate district vehicles.
l. Perform related work as required.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
1. Proper methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the grounds maintenance trade.
2. Basic types of plants and shrubs, their characteristics and care requirements.
3. Plant care techniques.
4. Basic math.
5. Simple record keeping.
6. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to:
7. Read blueprints, design landscaping plans, and plans lawn layouts.
8. Use hand tools, such as shovels, hoes, and rakes.
9. Maintain assigned tools and equipment in clean working order providing proper security and maintenance.
10. Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices, and possession of a valid, appropriate, and unrestricted California Driver's License.
11. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
12. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience:
13. Individuals possessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above are considered to possess the necessary education.
14. Recent experience in grounds maintenance.

Conditions of Employment

Employment is on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Short term/temporary assignments do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked, and are limited to 28 hours per week. The hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the Coordinator of the program.

This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. We accept applications all year long. Departments or Divisions will refer to the POOL of applications on file to fill temporary assignments as the need arises. (Applications will remain in the pool for one year.)
