Police Dispatcher

TWO POSITIONS WILL BE FILLED FROM THIS RECRUITMENT . In a high-pressure and high-stress environment manages and prioritizes all emergency and non-emergency calls for service received by the University Police Department. Makes appropriate and accurate entries while tracking movements of Police Officers in Computer Aided Dispatch ( CAD ) system and operates VCIN / NCIC Computer terminal to provide accurate DMV and VCIN / NCIC checks for Police Officers. Monitors fire, panic, and intrusion alarms and operates two-way voice radio equipment in compliance with Departmental and FCC directives.

Demonstrated oral and written communications skills along with the ability to communicate effectively with members of the department, the university community, and the public. Demonstrated ability to interpret and follow established policies and procedures. Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment to make appropriate decisions in highly stressful situations. Demonstrated ability to complete work assignments in a timely fashion while multi-tasking. Demonstrated ability to work independently. Demonstrates good keyboarding skills and knowledge of PC-based software such as the Microsoft Office Suite.

Special licenses, registration or certification
Must have ability to obtain and maintain certification to operate Virginia Criminal Information Network ( VCIN ) computer system. Must have ability to obtain Commonwealth of Virginia certification as a Police Dispatcher. Valid driver's license with an insurable driving record.

Education or training
High School diploma or equivalent.

Level and type of experience
Some customer service experience. Some experience working in a law enforcement or security setting.

Preferred knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification
Certification by the Commonwealth of Virginia as Police Dispatcher. Virginia State Police VCIN certification. Some college preferred. Some experience working in a college setting.

Conditions of Employment
Must work a rotating shift schedule which includes days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Some overtime required. Must successfully pass a criminal background investigation. Must obtain VCIN certification within one year of hire.
Considered "essential personnel" for emergency conditions and inclement weather and expected to report to duty during those conditions.

Annual Salary/Hourly Rate
Salary commensurate with education and experience
