Position Summary:

Academic Specialist - Outreach



The Department of Entomology at Michigan State University in coordination with The Bee Informed Partnership (www.beeinformed.org) is seeking an Academic Specialist ? Outreach to work with commercial beekeeping operations based in Michigan and possibly adjacent states. This position will be part of the Technical Transfer Team and will serve beekeepers while their colonies are in Michigan as well as when they move their colonies out of state for almond pollination in California and to wintering locations in Florida.



The duties include intense fieldwork, extensive travel, close interaction with beekeepers and many other members of the Bee Informed Partnership (BIP) team. These interactions require the applicant to be an experienced beekeeper, work well in a team environment, listen well, be non-judgmental, communicate effectively with team members, be self-starting, hardworking, and sensitive about privacy and security of all data.



This position also works with the Bee Informed Partnership scientists to develop and conduct applied research, write a weekly BIP blog, process samples for Nosema and Varroa mite loads, keep up-to-date records, including data summaries and reports, develop and give presentations, posters and other media to communicate project related goals; present relevant findings to local, regional, and national bee groups and other pollinator or agricultural related groups or schools at meetings, symposiums, field days and outreach events; keep abreast of and communicate new developments in relevant topics.



The position is an Annual Year (12 month) fixed term position with an end date of 4/30/18. The position is renewable annually based upon performance and availability of funding.



This position will be located in Traverse City, Michigan.
Faculty: Minimum Qualifications Support Staff: Minimum Requirements

Bachelors degree in Agriculture or related field. At least 2 years beekeeping experience, preferably in a commercial beekeeping setting.
