Marist College seeks an innovative, collegial, and entrepreneurial dean to lead its School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

The dean is the school's chief academic and administrative officer providing overall oversight to four departments, 45 full-time faculty, approximately 60 part-time faculty, and approximately 800 undergraduate and 100 graduate students. Undergraduate departments include criminal justice, education, psychology, and social work/sociology. Graduate programs include master's degrees in mental health counseling, education, school psychology, and educational psychology. Marist delivers academic programs on its main campus in the historic Hudson River Valley of New York; a branch campus in the rich cultural center of Florence, Italy; and online.

Marist College is an independent, private institution situated on 210 acres overlooking the Hudson River midway between New York City and the state capital of Albany. It enrolls 4,500 full-time and 850 part-time undergraduates and approximately 900 graduate students. The institution also includes a riverfront estate housing the Raymond A. Rich Institute for Leadership Development and a full branch campus in Florence, Italy. Marist has been recognized for excellence by U.S. News & World Report, TIME, The Princeton Review's The Best 366 Colleges, and Barron's Best Buys in College Education. The college is a pioneer in the area of online degree programs.


Duties and Responsibilities:

As a member of both the Dean's Council and the President's Cabinet, the dean fills an important leadership position at an institution with a national reputation for teaching excellence and technology innovation. Reporting to the vice president for academic affairs/dean of faculty, the dean is responsible to develop and to implement programs that bring students and distinction to Marist; to engage with alumni, advisory boards, and other professionals to promote grants, postgraduate placements, internship opportunities, and support for academic initiatives; and to hire and to evaluate all full-time faculty in the school. The dean exercises supervisory responsibility for the school's personnel, planning, fiscal management, project development, facilities, operations, and other administrative functions.


Qualifications:

The dean is the "face of the school" to the broader community. The ideal candidate will have experience in the academic community, although candidates with distinguished careers related to the school's programs in areas outside of the academy also will be considered. He or she will be knowledgeable about trends in higher education and will possess the vision and experience necessary to lead a talented faculty and to marshal resources to address challenges and opportunities. Proven experience in developing support and cultivating partnerships with internal and external constituencies is required. Ideal candidates will have experience working with one or more of the accrediting bodies associated with Marist's programs: National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), Council for the Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP), Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), and Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Within the school the dean manages the department chairs, program directors, associate and assistant deans, and three staff members. Further, the new dean will be committed to the assessment of student learning, the fostering of a diverse and inclusive community, and the role of the liberal arts in a comprehensive institution. A terminal degree in a related field is required, as well as a record of progressively increasing responsibility and demonstrated leadership in a senior management role.
