Reports to:
Direction is received from the Vice President of Instruction, Academic Affairs.

Supervision Exercised: Functional and administrative supervision is exercised over faculty and staff for assigned areas.

Job Summary 
Responsible for providing divisional leadership that supports the mission, vision and strategic goals of the College.  Responsible for the development, implementation, evaluation and management of assigned instructional programs, services, budget and division employees.  Provides leadership in curriculum, academic assessment, and budgeting.  Fosters collaborative working relationships with internal and external counterparts to communicate and coordinate initiatives that support College and instructional goals.  Includes the following instructional programs and courses: Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Life Sciences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Related duties may be assigned.

  • Manage the overall operations of the Mathematics, Physical and Life Sciences Division.
  • Provide strategic, innovative leadership in the design, implementation and continuous improvement of the division and related programs and services.
  • Provide leadership in curriculum design, instructional delivery, accreditation and assessment activities.
  • Ensure that procedures and actions taken are consistent with the faculty association’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Develop processes and systems that enhance instruction. Serve as the liaison to other division and departments of the College relating to academic programs, physical assets, and facilities.
  • Responsible for employee supervision and accountability, including recruitment, selection, orientation, scheduling, evaluation, coaching, rewards/recognition, and discipline in accordance with College policy and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Approve student requests for course waivers, exemptions, and substitutions in consultation with Chairs and faculty.
  • In accordance with College policy and the Collective Bargaining Agreement, oversee process of hiring new and replacement division positions and the faculty tenure process.
  • Ensure division employees provide excellent customer service and a welcoming, supportive, and respectful work environment.  Investigates and resolves requests and concerns.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal employees.  Actively participate on and/or lead various College committees, meetings, and work groups.
  • Ensure that division faculty and staff are kept informed of college initiatives and are represented on appropriate college committees and task forces.
  • Review individual professional development requests and make recommendations to the Vice President of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Direct the semester class scheduling and faculty assignments in coordination with other areas of the College.
  • Ensure class coverage and notification of students as a result of faculty absences.
  • Ensure that course descriptions, course syllabi, and other course materials are current and in accordance with guidelines, and maintain files of these documents.
  • Oversee maintenance of accurate catalog information, advising materials and division content on the Rock Valley website.
  • Where applicable, ensure that accreditation reports are prepared as required.
  • Responsible for division budget(s) development and management. Prepare, monitor, control and ensure spending within the budget allocation.  Develop cost estimates for future division needs.
  • Support the faculty and the Vice President of Liberal Arts and Sciences in investigating and developing alternative funding sources, including grant proposals.
  • Collaborate with faculty and the Director of Marketing to plan division-based marketing initiatives.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records, personnel files, and other sensitive information.
  • Regular attendance is expected.
  • Using tact and courtesy, the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with persons contacted in the course of work.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree required in one of the assigned discipline areas, Ph.D. or Ed.D. preferred. Current knowledge in one or more of assigned discipline areas.  Minimum of three years higher education teaching experience, full-time teaching experience preferred. Administrative experience in a higher education setting preferred.
