Overview

The Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer (Term Position) works under the Quality Assurance and Laboratory processes to provide quality assurance support to various projects at the Laboratory. Supportive duties and activities may include:
  • Providing quality support for procurements, by identifying the appropriate quality requirements for procuring items and services; participating as a consultant on teams evaluating proposals; providing quality oversight and support throughout the procurement effort; and reviewing supplier submittals for compliance
  • Participating in and/or leading audits of PPPL programs or suppliers, including determining the scope, performing, and reporting the audit results; and evaluate proposed corrective actions and follow-up until actions are completed and verified.
  • Performing analyses of data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Participating in, or leading, root cause analyses.
  • Reviewing processes and programs for improvement opportunities.
  • Participating in the quality planning and implementation process for small- to medium- sized projects by developing plans or procedures, collecting and analyzing various quality data, performing compliance- and performance-based audits, assuming responsibility for the quality aspects of complex procurements, etc.
  • Responsible for the implementation and improvement of PPPL Quality Assurance processes and procedures including: coordination and oversight of QA activities associated with Serious and Major installations, fabrications, supplier, oversight and experimental and facilities upgrades.
  • The individual will follow all PPPL safety regulations and QA/QC Department procedures.


Responsibilities

  • Perform various high-level quality program work functions with only general management direction, e.g., quality support and oversight for critical, technically challenging procurements or leading complex audits. As long as the requirements of the associated quality program are satisfied, the individual has full responsibility and freedom for organizing, executing, and coordinating these assignments. Establish quality requirements for a critical and complex procurement and work with the requisitioner/engineer and supplier to assure these requirements are met. Perform routine surveillances of ongoing fabrications, assemblies, and construction activities. Work with project or Division management to establish a cost-effective quality program taking into consideration the risks involved.
  • Other assignments, as made by the Head of QA/QC.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • Experience applying quality requirements under an approved QA Program that is compliant with NQA-1, ISO 9000, other national or international standard is required.
  • At least ten (10) years experience in a quality assurance or quality control position, or in an engineering position that routinely applies quality practices to the engineering work under an approved Quality Program.
  • Specific experience in a research and development environment is desirable.
  • Experience performing quality inspections is desirable.
  • Experience auditing engineering programs and processes is required.
  • Experience auditing environmental, safety, or health physics programs is desirable.
  • Experience working with accelerators, power plants, heavy industrial or other similar facilities is desired. Preferably, two (2) or more years of experience would be associated with nuclear facilities or accelerators.
  • Qualified to perform field surveillances
  • Expert on Traveler or other process/planning and documentation systems
  • Experienced with evaluating and tracking Manufacturing/Inspection/Test Plans and Travelers
  • Must be willing to travel to vendors/suppliers, as needed.
  • Must be very qualified in the use of computers, generating reports, charts, and graphs; and in the use of databases.
  • Supervisory experience required.
