Overview

The Senior Quality Control (QC) Mechanical/Welding Inspector III -(Term Position) is responsible for the implementation and improvement of PPPL Quality Control processes and procedures including coordination and oversight of QC activities associated with Serious and Major installations, fabrications, supplier, oversight and experimental and facilities upgrades.

Under general supervision, examines mechanical installations, instrumentation, valves, and fittings for defects and for conformance with drawings, specifications, standards, and codes using physical observation and by witnessing tests on equipment. Individual will follow all applicable PPPL safety regulations and QA/QC Department procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects major installations from beginning through completion to ensure compliance to the PPPL ES&H program, and mechanical and electrical codes (local and national). Also performs weld inspections to ensure compliance with ASME and AWS Code standards.
  • In conjunction with project engineering management, plans and oversees cost effective inspection services for specific work activities in order to ensure quality and ES&H effectiveness and compliance. These inspections may be performed by inspectors from the QA/QC organization or satellite inspectors for other PPPL organizations.
  • Generates and issues various reports, such as inspection reports, non-conformance reports, and activity reports.
  • Identifies general problem areas that may span many work activities and could potentially impact Lab quality or ES&H, provides management with potential solutions to correct the problems.
  • Establishes and oversees the effectiveness of the processes for Quality Control. Makes appropriate improvements.
  • Has knowledge of, supports, and consistently applies the Laboratory's Integrated Safety Management (ISM) program and all ES&H requirements. Encourages others to be safety-conscious and observe safety rules, and use of safety equipment. Reviews work for environmental impact. Complies with ES&H Directives, DOE Orders and OSHA standards. Attends required training.


Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent, plus ten (10) years of related experience in equivalent examination or inspection activities associated with accelerator, power plants, heavy industrial or other similar facilities. Preferably, least two (2) years of this experience should be associated with nuclear facilities or accelerators.
  • Must have current certification as a Welding Inspector per the American Welding Society.
  • Experience reading technical specifications, procedures, and drawings is required.
  • Must have previous certification as a Level III QC Mechanical Inspector per ANSI N45.2.6.
  • Certification as ASQ Quality Inspector preferred.
  • Certification desired in Nondestructive Testing to SNT-TC-1A Level III for Visual Testing (VT), Penetrant Testing (PT), and Magnetic Testing (MT).
  • Knowledgeable of ES&H, HVAC equipment, concrete forming and reinforcement.
  • Electrical inspection capabilities are highly desirable.
  • Computer literacy and supervisory experience required.
