Overview

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory seeks to fill a research position at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego, CA. The successful candidate will design execute and analyze experiments on the DIII-D tokamak aimed at developing reliable high performance operating regimes relevant to ITER and future fusion reactors. Whole Device Modeling with the TRANSP set of codes will be used to validate reduced physics models and then those models will be utilized to plan and optimize experiments in inductive and steady state operating regimes on DIII-D.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will analyze experimental data and use theoretical models to interpret experiments at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego to understand the transport, stability and equilibrium properties of inductive and steady-state scenarios and to design improved scenarios for ITER and future reactors. Optimization of the tokamak plasma performance requires whole device modeling that couples transport, stability and equilibrium profile evolution to determine the most effective discharge trajectory and actuators to achieve high performance. The successful candidate will use time-dependent predictive simulations of the equilibrium, auxiliary heating and current drive actuators with first-principles based pedestal, core transport models, and stability models to achieve an optimal trajectory for stationary operation. Key issues to address are the validity of transport models to capture the thermal, particle, and momentum transport for a mix of ion and electron heating, the ability of reduced fast-ion transport models to accurately capture the experimentally measured fast ion distribution, and optimization of current and pressure profiles to maximize stability. Responsibilities will be maintenance and development of integrated modeling work-flows that address these key issues, and close interaction with the experimental and modeling groups during the planning, execution, and analysis of experiments on DIII-D.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in plasma physics, with preference given to applicants with experience in MHD equilibrium, transport, current drive, confinement and stability analysis of tokamak plasmas.

Applicants should have a strong computational background and have familiarity with plasma heating, current drive, and transport models. Strong computational skills are essential for analyzing experimental data and exercising a range of analytical and theoretical model predictions. The successful candidate will be based in San Diego and is expected to travel regularly to PPPL and to other national and international facilities for joint experiments.
