THE DEPARTMENT

The Office Technology (OFTECH) discipline in the Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS) department at Santa Monica College is committed to offering programs that strengthen the student's ability to enter or advance in a chosen career. OFTECH offers associate degree and certificate programs that provide a balance of general academics, technical skills, and personal growth-- as well as job placement opportunities. The OFTECH faculty fosters student success and focuses on underrepresented and minority students.

THE POSITION

The Office Technology discipline currently offers instruction in Health Information Technology / Office Technology courses that include, medical transcription, medical terminology, medical coding/billing, medical office procedures, electronic health records, keyboarding, and word processing. This Office Technology position requires expertise in at least four of the subject areas listed above. This assignment may include teaching day, evening, or weekend classes; distance learning and hybrid classes; and using multiple teaching methodologies. The instructor must continually update knowledge and skills to maintain mastery-level proficiency in the curriculum discipline and strive for continuous improvement of self and the department.

Duties:
-Teach all levels of courses specific to health information technology, as well as office technology;
-Coordinate, plan, prepare, present, evaluate, and deliver classroom instruction and related activities, including developing and revising curriculum; using computer and advanced technologies in instruction;
-Update knowledge and skills to maintain currency of the curriculum area through study, seminars, and return-to-industry activities;
-Offer student advising and assistance;
-Assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussion;
-Develop and file appropriate syllabi for each course taught, ensuring that each syllabus conforms to required and approved curriculum, has appropriate content and pedagogy, and reflects currency in field;
-Recommend textbooks and other instructional materials, including classroom equipment to the department;
-Keep students informed about their progress through the prompt evaluation and grading of assignments and exams;
-Maintain and report accurate and complete scholastic records, including attendance records;
-Participate in program and curriculum review and development;
-Develop and assess student learning and program level outcomes;
-Utilize the results of student learning outcomes assessment to make improvements in teaching and learning;
-Post and maintain office hours for student consultations;
-Participate in student recruitment and articulation programs;
-Participate in faculty recruitment and peer evaluation;
-Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
-Collegially participate in department, college, and discipline-specific activities;
-Participate in assignments and activities that support accreditation, institutional planning, and institutional effectiveness;
-Participate in college governance, including serving on various committees;
-Participate in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations;
-Attend faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the department chair, or college administration.

Additional Duties:


Minimum Qualifications:
Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience OR the equivalent* OR possession of an appropriate valid California Community College Credential authorizing service in the specified subject area(s). Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the socio-economic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity within the college student population including students with physical and/or learning disabilities as these factors relate to differences in learning styles.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Health Information Technology, Health Information Administration, Business Education or related field. Current professional certifications in Medical Billing / Coding or related field. Five years of higher education teaching experience in related field.

Selection Process:
The selection process shall include the following steps:
(a) A screening/evaluation committee will review application materials to determine minimum qualifications for the position are met;
(b) A pool of qualifying candidates will be invited to an initial interview with the selection committee at the Santa Monica Community College District's main campus or one of its satellite campuses;
(c) Upon completion of initial interview process, the selection committee will recommend candidates for final interview with the Superintendent/President who will recommend a candidate for appointment by the Board of Trustees.

Applicants will be notified by letter of their status as the committee progresses through the hiring process. Candidates who are selected for a final interview with the Superintendent/President should not expect official notification of the status of candidacy until the Board of Trustees has acted upon the Superintendent/President's recommendation.

All travel costs related to an initial interview will be borne by the candidate. Only ½ of the airfare cost to the Superintendent/President's interview will be borne by the college.

Salary Range:
$61,183 - $127,482

Pay Philosophy:
Starting salaries for full-time academic positions are based on a combination of education and experience. Initial placement is within the starting salary range. Further advancements are based on longevity and educational growth.
