Position Summary:
The Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences is seeking applicants who will establish and maintain a highly visible and impactful program in companion animal behavior and welfare. Primary responsibilities of this academic year, tenure track position will be teaching (60%) and Extension (40%). The successful applicant is expected to teach innovative courses within the Animal and Poultry Sciences curriculum and across the college and broader university, as well as conduct Extension/outreach programs to the companion animal community. Scholarly activity, such as peer-reviewed publications on pedagogy and numbered extension publications is expected. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to contribute to our program in the area of human-animal interaction. Possible teaching areas might include the social and emotional impact companion animals can have on humans, and how animal companionship can improve human brain health and quality of life, or in a comparable area of expertise. The successful applicant will also develop and deliver effective outreach programs through Virginia Cooperative Extension (adult and 4-H Youth Development, fact sheets and other outreach efforts) in the area of companion animal behavior and welfare. Interactions with existing programs in behavior and welfare, nutrition, health, genetics, physiology, the human-animal bond, therapeutic intervention, and companion animals as model organisms to understand human health, as well as engagement with the companion animal industry are expected. The appointee will have access to a wide-range of animal and infrastructure resources and many collaborative opportunities within the department and college, as well as campus units such as the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. The successful applicant is expected to pursue continuing professional development and to provide service to the teaching mission of the department, such as participation in department and college curriculum development, academic advising, and advising undergraduate student organizations.

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Animal Sciences, or a closely-related field (e.g. Animal Behavior, Applied Ethology, Companion Animal Science, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred qualifications include: experience working with diverse teams and students from different cultures, teaching experience in companion animal behavior, experience advising college students.
