Student Assistant Pool - Coastline College


Definition
A student assistant works in a particular department of the college or the district site and has job responsibilities specifically designed for a student. Assignments typically deal with clerical or communication related duties and assistance to any division. However, the nature of the job may vary from department to department. These jobs also take into account the class timings and exam schedule of the student and are more flexible than off-campus jobs.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES : Student assistants have a wide variety of choices and can choose assignments in a department that is aligned with their academic and career goals and interests, as available. Accordingly the duties and responsibilities will varying depending on the nature of the assignment. Examples include, but are not limited to the following:

 

  1. Clerical office support, such as answering phones, filing, sorting mail.
  2. Use modern office equipment.
  3. Use a computer and applicable software to enter and retrieve information and reports.
  4. Grading objective tests.
  5. Manual labor.
  6. Laboratory maintenance; assist students in lab settings.
  7. Custodial duties.
  8. Groundskeeping.
  9. Food preparation.
  10. Cashiering.
  11. Accounting.
  12. Drive delivery routes.
  13. Make simple repairs on various media equipment.
  14. Security Patrol.
  15. Operate technical equipment.
  16. Mix chemicals.
  17. Perform tasks requiring technical skills.
  18. Deal with public and other students or employees in a stressful environment.
  19. Repair technical and electronic equipment.
  20. Act as student management trainee.
  21. Act as language interpreter or interpreter for the handicapped.
  22. Assist students in advanced science or math laboratories.
  23. Assist in computer programming.

Skills required to perform job assignment.
Ability to balance work and studies.

Qualifications
Students must be enrolled in a minimum number of units to be eligible for a student assistant position. Please refer to AP 7270 Student Assistants for additional information.
