Dean, Culinary Arts

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Provost, the Dean of Culinary Arts is expected to provide academic leadership and strategic vision to a robust Culinary Arts program based on a scholar/practitioner model, where Faculty have significant industry experience and instruction is offered in both traditional and blended formats. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to oversee curriculum development and educational quality. He or she will assume faculty oversight, as well as assessment and retention initiatives. He or she must exhibit the ability to handle a highly diversified student population inclusive of international students from all over the world as well as exhibit a global mindset in overall vision. The Dean will establish and maintain positive relationships with industry and business representatives resulting in internship, and placement opportunities both domestic and international. In addition, the candidate will develop and foster working relationships with advisory board members to ensure that programs reflect the changing market and employment needs of industry and maintain an international focus. The dean also has oversight of Kendall's international affiliate partnerships, and with that, must exhibit a global mindset.

The Dean understands that the delivery of a high-quality learning experience for Kendall students is the most critical aspect of the position and has the ability to support faculty and staff in their efforts to achieve this objective.
The Dean should understand and can demonstrate how to achieve all aspects of the student experience through a clearly defined and managed assessment effort and is able to communicate effectively with students and staff at all levels. Student success is a cornerstone of the College and the incumbent is well versed in student engagement practices and appropriate instructional design, including the integration of technologies into education delivery.

The Dean will work closely with the enrollment and marketing department to ensure the success of the program and the enrollment growth. The Dean will support the marketing plan by participating in College events, providing guidance on program positioning, and developing relationships with high schools, community colleges, and businesses.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership
  • Leads the planning, development, management, and assessment of the School of Culinary Arts.
  • Integrates the institution's mission and values through work with faculty, staff, and other academic leaders to assure a student centered focus; integrates mission, vision, and initiatives across the institution.
  • Collaborate with key departments to enhance success including the enrollment, marketing and financial teams.
  • Leads improvement and retention initiatives.
  • Leads growth and business sustainability
  • Advances the organizational culture that is based on student-centeredness, accountability and collaboration.
  • Fosters a culture of evidence and promotes a variety of research and assessment activities designed to document the academic quality of its programs.
  • Participates in strategic planning and development of key internal and external College resources and relationships.
Management:
  • Manages operational functions, including direct responsibility for its budget, personnel, facilities, and associated programs.
  • Successfully drives the intermediate and long-range goals and plans of the school and leads the schools in growth efforts aimed at retention, student experience and quality programs.
  • Supervises the development and application of personnel policies and procedures, including rewards and recognitions that are consistent with the institutional policies.
  • In conjunction with Finance, manages the budgets for both schools as well as monitoring course and non-course payments (i.e. Special Payments).
  • Reviews and approves contracts and vendor agreements.


External Requirements
REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Master's degree required; Ph. D, or progress toward Ph.D preferred
  • Significant industry accomplishments
  • International work experience a plus
  • Teaching experience, preferably at the post-secondary level required.
  • Minimum of 12 years related experience in the culinary industry or the post-secondary sector. Preferably, the Dean will have experience in both industry and post-secondary education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and quality education preferably
  • Leadership experience, preferably including provision of academic and instructional leadership to faculty and staff.
  • Experience speaking with varied external groups and individuals and a record of engaging partners and other relevant organizations.
  • Knowledge of financial management systems.
  • Collaborative work style with a diverse population to achieve team spirit and a shared vision.
