Assistant/Associate Professor Social Justice

Virginia Tech is a public land-grant university, committed to teaching and learning, research, and outreach to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world. Building on its motto of Ut Prosim (that I may serve), Virginia Tech is dedicated to InclusiveVT-serving in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence. We seek candidates who adopt and practice the Principles of Community, which are fundamental to our on-going efforts to increase access and inclusion, and to create a community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members. Virginia Tech actively seeks a broad spectrum of candidates to join our community in preparing leaders for the world.

Position Summary:
Virginia Tech invites applications for one full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position in social inequalities and social justice in the Department of Sociology to begin Fall, 2017. Appointment will be at the assistant or associate professor level. Applicants must have the Ph.D. in hand at the start of appointment. We seek a scholar who will contribute to the department's graduate and undergraduate programs, maintain a program of research excellence, and participate in a new university-wide, interdisciplinary initiative (see below). The normal teaching load is two courses each semester.
We seek a sociologist or other social scientist whose research addresses how social inequalities interact with environmental factors to influence human health and wellbeing. Areas of specialization are open, but expertise in such topics as environmental justice, poverty, critical science studies, and the like are welcome, particularly as these relate to social justice. An intersectional approach is preferred.
The successful candidate will contribute a critical social science perspective to a university-wide, interdisciplinary initiative to enhance curriculum and research focused on adaptive brains and behaviors (http://provost.vt.edu/destination-areas.html), broadly defined to include issues of social justice and equity. This position focuses on the latter. We seek candidates who address the ways that systemic power relations (e.g., environmental racism) may lead to lower quality of life or how social inequalities matter for ameliorating such problems, including the effectiveness and appropriateness of policies or programs for different groups. Cover letters should address explicitly how one's expertise addresses such issues, and candidates should be prepared to teach relevant courses.
The Department of Sociology grants the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in sociology with options in Africana Studies and Women's and Gender Studies. We also offer an undergraduate major in criminology. The Department of Sociology is the academic home of programs in Africana Studies, American Indian Studies, and Women's and Gender Studies, and it houses the Center for Race and Social Policy Research and the Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention. We encourage applicants who can contribute to these programs.
Virginia Tech recognizes the critical importance of diverse teams of scholars. It seeks to diversify its faculty along multiple dimensions, including those that have been historically marginalized and excluded given the institutional history and legacy of the university.
