The School of Nursing in the University of Delaware College of Health Sciences seeks a 9-month, full time Full Professor with an established research program in aging to fill the endowed Jeanne K. Buxbaum Chair of Nursing Science. The Jeanne K. Buxbaum Chair of Nursing Science is one of six named professors in the College of Health Sciences, three in the School of Nursing, and more than 100 at the University of Delaware (http://provost.udel.edu/academics/named-professors/). Qualifications must include a PhD in nursing or related discipline; established program of research in aging, evidenced by a sustained record of data-based publications and external funding; experience in undergraduate & graduate, including doctoral education; eligibility for licensure as a registered nurse in Delaware. All faculty are expected to contribute to a welcoming campus environment that embraces diversity.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Dr. Jeanne K. Buxbaum was committed to the development of nurses to address aspects of aging associated with frailty in late life, including sensory loss and other disabling conditions. The endowment directly supports the named professor, a junior faculty member and scholarships for students as Buxbaum Scholars who, through service learning and research contribute to the well-being of challenged and frail older adults. Since its inception in 2006, the endowment has supported 35 Buxbaum Scholars who have progressed to become practitioners and scholars that benefit older adults through their clinical practice, teaching, research and community engagement. The School of Nursing is devoting significant resources to science and practice in aging by supporting existing faculty with programs in aging, dedicated research space in a new building soon to be under construction, and specific educational programs devoted to promoting community-based nursing practice competencies for aging populations.

The named professor will join a School with an aggressive plan to develop a nationally and internationally recognized portfolio of research and faculty research expertise aimed at benefiting health care generally and reducing health disparities within vulnerable populations within Delaware. It is our aim to develop collaborative research partnerships within the School of Nursing, College of Health Sciences, and with major health sciences centers in the region who are part of the Delaware Health Sciences Alliance (http://www.delawarehsa.org/).

Ranked second, nationally, among the best places to study the health professions by College Factual, the College of Health Sciences is a thriving academic unit of over 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 110 faculty with outstanding research and teaching facilities. The College has recently opened an exciting new 100,000 sq. ft. clinical research facility (pictured above). The College also includes the departments of Behavioral Health and Nutrition, Kinesiology and Applied Physiology, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Medical Laboratory Sciences, and Physical Therapy. With annual research expenditures of approximately $16 million, the college currently houses a number of large, interdisciplinary grants with significant funding from the NIH and DoD. The college boasts strong research teams in the areas of cardiovascular health, neurological disorders, and other chronic disease conditions, as well as biomechanics and rehabilitation science. There are also numerous collaborative linkages with our clinical partners.

With roots tracing back to 1743, the University of Delaware combines tradition and innovation, offering students a rich heritage along with the latest in instructional and research technology. Delaware, the nation's First State, is an ideal laboratory for scholars interested in aging and engagement with older adults. The state-wide Delaware Aging Network, Aging and Disability Resource Center, Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities, and specialty initiatives, such as the State Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease support a population comprised of >13% 65+ year olds.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Compensation packages are competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Faculty at the University have regularly received annual cost-of-living and merit salary increases and the benefits package is one of the best in the nation.
