Associate Vice President And Dean Of Students


Reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs (VPSA), the Associate Vice President & Dean of Students (AVPD) is a strategic partner for the Division of Student Affairs with a focus on enhancing the student experience and increasing student success. The AVPD will work with one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation, thereby must possess a passion for, and knowledge of, cultural inclusion. The AVPD is responsible for the supervision of the following areas: Residence Life, Student Conduct, Student Life on the Staten Island Campus and Division-wide initiatives. The AVPD will provide vision, leadership, and strategic direction and ensure the delivery of effective and quality service to students. This position serves as the Chief Conduct Officer and provides advice and counsel to the Vice President regarding the overall student experience and serves as an advocate for the student body. The AVPD will provide an executive presence in the leadership of the division across functions in the absence of, and as assigned by, the VPSA.

The AVPD will provide focused leadership to the Residence Life staff, ensuring a vibrant and safe campus living environment for students. The AVPD will need to collaborate with various campus departments, including but not limited to: Public Safety, the Center for Counseling and Consultation, Student Engagement, the Freshman Center, all Academic Colleges, and the external community. The AVPD is also instrumental in the interpretation and application of University standards and codes. The AVPD will assure the St. John's Mission is considered in carrying out all duties and responsibilities of this position.

Key Job Elements
  1. Unite the distinctive functions under AVPD's purview to leverage resources, services, and programming.
  2. Evaluate and measure the success of all services within Residence Life and Student Conduct. Engage in ongoing benchmarking of best practices to ensure strong evidence-based services and programs.
  3. Establish relationships with other departments within Student Affairs, relevant university functions and external constituents, leverage the resources available to the make most effective, state of the art programming and services available to students.
  4. Manage the departmental leaders, holding them accountable for: results of individual and shared goals; coordination and collaboration within Student Affairs and with community stakeholders; and commitment to excellence.
  5. Oversee the an assessment plan for the function areas, moving assessment in Student Affairs from a satisfaction and participation model to a comprehensive logic model with learning outcomes and program evaluation outcomes. Design will take into account University mission and department mission
  6. Apply and enforce the Student Code of Conduct.
  7. Maintain close collaboration with the Public Safety, the Center for Counseling and Consultation, Student Engagement, the Freshman Center, all Academic Colleges. As needed, refer students to resources, offices, or persons that can be of assistance to them; serve in a continuing collaborating role with these sources.
  8. Execute leadership in domains outside AVPD's areas including but not limited to: budget, policy review and development, leadership and membership in university-wide initiatives.
  9. Develop short- and long-range vision for the Dean of Students Office.
  10. Create and coordinate department publications such as the Student Guide to Living Off-Campus and the Student Code of Conduct. Ensure all publications meet best practices and standards.
  11. Overall responsibility for Departmental budgets for Residence Life, Student Conduct and Student Life on the Manhattan Campus.
  12. Provide first line contact and problem resolution for parents, students and others to assist in optimizing the students' educational experience.
  13. Reinforce the safety net by collaborating with the Counseling Center, Deans and others involved with crisis intervention.
  14. Provide oversight of Student Government, Inc. and multiple other student organization.
  15. Other duties as assigned by the VPSA


Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration, Management, or related fields.
  • Minimum five (5) years of professional administrative experience at a college/university in positions of increasing responsibility.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • 5-7 years of progressive responsibilities in more than one area of Student Life.
  • High level of energy and enthusiasm for working in an extremely demanding, and diverse environment.
  • Proficiency with computer technology in order to access data, maintain records, generate reports, and communicate with others.
  • Exhibit the flexibility to manage multiple complex roles which require a broad base of knowledge.
  • Have experience with strategic planning and assessment of learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrate an ability to work successfully with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff, and external parties.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills necessary for interaction with students, faculty, staff and parents.


Preferred Candidates will:
  • Hold a Doctoral-level degree.
  • Possess the ability to articulate the philosophy of Student Affairs and its contribution to student development.
  • Show evidence of student conduct experience with a strong commitment to social justice.
  • Demonstrate excellent listening and problem-solving skills.
  • Have evidenced involvement in collaborative projects between student affairs and academic programs.


Additional Requirements:

Weekend and evening hours required as needed to fully engage with the University Community.
