Postdoctoral Associate, Photovoltaics Research Laboratory

Working at MIT offers opportunities, an environment, a culture - and benefits - that just aren't found together anywhere else. If you're curious, motivated, want to be part of a unique community, and help shape the future - then take a look at this opportunity.

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Mechanical Engineering-Photovoltaics Research Laboratory (MIT PV Lab), to advance PV cost-modelling capabilities. Photovoltaic technology has experienced a notable reduction in price over the past years. Yet, to enable terawatt level installation, costs have to further decrease while power conversion efficiencies need to increase. Understanding the cost structure of the photovoltaic industries is of key importance to inform research about impactful contributions. The PV Lab has developed bottom-up cost analysis for different photovoltaic technologies, enabling it to calculate the minimum sustainable price (MSP) as a key measure for the state of the industry. Combining these tools with additional ones available from partners, this method can be extended to full LCOE calculations. The PV Lab has applied its tool set to perform a number of well-regarded studies and wants to further extend these studies, updating existing cost models and including new PV materials into the existing framework. Focus points of the aspired studies will lie on determining ways to simplify the fabrication process of HIT solar cells to reduce capex, and explore opportunities for different crystalline silicon materials.

Job Requirements
REQUIRED: Ph.D. in a related field; expertise in economics, PV manufacturing, and engineering; ability to work both independently and as part of a team and to strike an appropriate balance between advancing individual research agenda while contributing to the larger team's success. Background with advanced computation tools desired. Job #13907
