Postdoctoral Associate, Photovoltaics Research Lab (PVLab)-Global Engineering &

Job Description :
POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Mechanical Engineering-Photovoltaics Research Lab (PVLab)-Global Engineering and Research (GEAR) Lab, to lead a project involving engineering modelling an optimization of solar-powered desalination systems. The PVLab has established an energy-yield methodology to model intermittency of the generated electricity for a solar module. This project will extend this modeling effort to include energy storage and GEAR Lab -designed desalination system. Currently, systems are being constructed to validate the model at MIT, in India, and in the Middle East. This project will extend current capabilities by establishing a framework to investigate the working conditions globally. Critical skills include system-level modeling and manipulation of large (solar insolation) datasets to simulate the operation of PV-powered desalination systems. The principal output will be a tool that informs optimum system design for each location to minimize cost and maximize performance and reliability; helps decide which technology to use; and evaluates whether this desalination technology is suitable for a given location, given economic and resource-availability constraints. This study will be complemented by in-depth studies of existing systems for specific locations that will be used to calibrate and test the developed approach. Research will occur within a collaborative framework, with opportunities to work alongside researchers from other MIT groups and industrial partners.

Job Requirements:
REQUIRED: background handling big data, especially climate data, system design and optimization, and PV; and experience working with and mentoring student researchers. Seek a team-oriented individual who can also work independently and strike an appropriate balance between advancing her/his research agenda while contributing to the larger team's success. Should be interested in travelling to test locations and taking over some of the management responsibilities for the Gaza system. Job #13879

Application material should include a CV, cover letter, and contact information for at least two references. Please submit one document with all relevant information.
