Research Scientist



RESEARCH SCIENTIST, Plasma Science and Fusion Center, to serve as a key member of the boundary plasma science team, participating in and leading experiments and data analysis on MIT's Alcator C-Mod tokamak and NSTX-U tokamak at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. Near term research activities will focus on the utilization of a high-k, 'shoelace antenna' to probe and study boundary modes in the edge plasma of Alcator C-Mod, leading experiments, and analyzing data. Research activities will focus on boundary/pedestal on NSTX-U by implementing an advanced gas-puff imaging (GPI) diagnostic for NSTX-U using state-of-the art detectors, optics, and data acquisition systems; participating in and leading experiments on boundary/pedestal plasma turbulence and transport, utilizing GPI in conjunction with other edge diagnostics including a Mirror Langmuir Probe system; performing detailed analysis of boundary/pedestal plasma turbulence characteristics; and helping organize and direct boundary team activities on-site at PPPL, including assisting and mentoring Ph.D. students.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: Ph.D. or its equivalent specializing in the area of plasma physics; at least two years' postdoctoral experience in tokamak plasma physics research; strong record of hands-on experience building, testing, and implementing state-of-the-art diagnostic systems for a tokamak device and leading experiments; expertise in plasma turbulence, plasma modes, and mode analysis, including MHD and pedestal/boundary modes (e.g., QCM, WCM, GAM, EHO); familiarity with boundary/pedestal diagnostics, including gas-puff imaging; ability to present findings clearly, both orally and well-organized written reports; proficiency with IDL, Python, and/or MATLAB and with the MDSplus data archival system and associated data acquisition hardware; and strong interest and background in working with students. Experience with boundary turbulence codes (e.g., BOUT++) for interpretive modeling highly desirable. Job #13439
