Software Programmer, Intelligent Transportation Systems Lab (ITS)

SOFTWARE PROGRAMMER, Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE)-Intelligent Transportation Systems Lab (ITS), to assist in developing advanced technologies for freight data collection. Will work with the research team of MIT ITS and have the opportunity to travel to Singapore and work with the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) team on various research tasks. Will be responsible for a broad range of duties including extending a smartphone application for nonintrusive tracking of freight vehicles through drivers' smartphones and GPS loggers, complemented with location, contextual information, and truck drivers' surveys; GIS-based tracking data visualization features; prompted-recall of processed tracking data; further collection of joint data on drivers, carrier operations, and shipment characteristics; extending the smartphone application for shipment tracking accounting for specific issues, utilizing GPS devices and possibly integrated with cellular, Bluetooth, or RFID technologies; enhancing algorithms for raw data backend post-processing, i.e., map-matching and machine learning based on respondents' survey validation, past behavior, and GIS data; and enhancing the web-interface for tracking a validation survey that is tailored to each type of respondent and embedded with tracking data visualization features.

Job Requirements
REQUIRED: interest and experience in smartphone application, web-interface, and backend server database development; an undergraduate or graduate degree in electrical engineering and computer science; self-motivation; and ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Experience with one or more of the following required: Ruby on Rails 3.2+ (4.1+ preferred), mobile application development (Android and/or iOS), or front-end web development (JavaScript, jQuery, Bootstrap, Momentjs). Familiarity with the following areas preferred: Processing, Python, or Julia; relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL), and unit/integration testing (MiniTest/Rspec, Teaspoon/Jasmine/QUnit).
