Lecturer (6.005, Elements of Software Construction)

LECTURER, 6.005 (Elements of Software Construction), Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), to lecture with a focus on developing, launching, and teaching software engineering and computer architecture courses on MITx. Specific duties include participation in the creation and migration of MITx classes (specifically 6.004x and 6.005x) based on the existing residential Course 6 courses. Responsibilities include content creation and adaptation, e.g., lecture materials, problem sets, quizzes, videos, and other online materials; full-time participation in both online and residential educational activities during the fall, spring, and IAP terms; and developing and managing course infrastructure, e.g., websites, interactive courseware, online administrative tools, autograders, online labs and simulations, and other course software. Will also handle administrative responsibilities, e.g., locating, hiring, and supervising course staff; recordkeeping; interacting with department, Office of Digital Learning, and edX. Supervision of undergraduate and engineering master's projects (particularly those related to education) will be encouraged.

The anticipated level of activity is roughly twice that of a faculty teaching assignment. Specific course assignments to be determined, but the goal is to help develop/run/staff MITx courses with large enrollments in the areas of computer systems and software engineering. Will become involved in more than one course, acknowledging that first-time participation is likely to be more time consuming than participation in subsequent terms. Optional participation in research activities is subject to educational commitments, i.e., mostly outside of the academic terms.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: significant successful teaching experience in related undergraduate courses; demonstrated interest in educational innovation; and demonstrated software engineering experience, either in research or industry. A Ph.D. in an area related to teaching responsibilities is preferred. Job #10710

This is a five semester (nine month) term appointment with the possibility of renewal.
