Chair of the School of Public Service

The School of Public Service ( SPS ) in the Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University invites applicants for Chair of the SPS at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The SPS seeks an experienced, dynamic, entrepreneurial, and engaged leader who will leverage the potential of the SPS , its faculty, and its students into a leading program in the discipline. The SPS has nine full-time faculty and houses a NASPAA -accredited MPA program, a doctoral program in public administration and policy, graduate certificates in (a) public administration and policy and (b) public procurement and contract management, and an undergraduate minor in public service. The School is also engaged in developing a Center for Regional Excellence, a research and community engagement initiative to address regional issues.
We welcome applicants with expertise from all areas of public administration and policy who will contribute directly to the mission of the SPS and who will help to increase its visibility, both regionally and nationally. The Chair provides academic leadership, management and budgetary authority, and overall coordination of the SPS . The Chair will enhance the SPS's research and educational programs, will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring junior faculty and students, and will encourage excellence in research and teaching that contribute to the SPS's academic programs. The position reports to the Dean of the Strome College of Business and represents the SPS on college councils, committees, and in college processes as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications - knowledge, skills, and abilities
The successful applicant must have a clearly defined and well-established research agenda and should have a national reputation as a scholar. The successful candidate should also have the ability to teach public administration and policy courses in our MPA and Ph.D. programs; the ability to teach human resources is a plus. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of community engagement and show a willingness to raise the visibility of the SPS .
Candidates must have strong interpersonal and communication skills; possess an earned doctorate in public administration or related field; provide evidence of successful teaching, research, and service sufficient to warrant appointment at the rank of tenured Associate Professor or Professor.

Minimum Qualifications - Education or training
Applicants must have a PhD in Public Administration or a related field at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
Previous administrative experience in a higher education setting is highly desirable.
The School of Public Service is committed to multi-sector partnerships, which is the intersection and interaction of the public, government, nonprofit, and/or business sectors; candidates should have an interest in some aspect of multi-sector partnerships and/or multi-sector public service, such as privatization, contracting, citizen engagement, and social entrepreneurship.
Previous experience as a Chair, degree program director, or equivalent administrative experience in a higher education setting is highly desirable. Familiarity with NASPAA accreditation standards is desirable.
