VISITING INSTRUCTOR IN PHOTOGRAPHY

Job Description: The School of Art and Design at East Carolina University seeks a fixed-term Visiting Instructor in Photography to serve a one-year appointment, with the possibility of a renewal for a second year (maximum two-year appointment). The Visiting Instructor will teach the equivalent of eight courses per year (4 per semester), with the possibility of summer school courses. Courses will be in photography and discipline-related foundations. Additional responsibilities will include participating in formal graduate and undergraduate level critiques, assisting with the maintenance of the digital print lab, darkrooms, and lighting studio facilities, and continued development of personal research. This position provides a private office, access to the photography labs (B&W darkrooms, alternative process lab, digital printing, studio lighting, etc.) and the robust facilities within the School of Art and Design (including the wood shop, and the new Shape Lab with 3D printers, CNC routers, laser cutters, etc.).

With more than 40 full-time faculty (and a similar number of graduate students) and more than 500 undergraduates, the School of Art and Design is the largest BFA art program in North Carolina, with over 40 years of continuous tradition. For more information: www.ecu.edu/soad

Greenville is located in the north central coastal plain region of Eastern North Carolina, approximately 85 miles east of Raleigh, the capital city of North Carolina and 87 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean. With easy access to North Carolina's "Research Triangle" (just over an hour's drive), and in close driving distance to Richmond, VA (3 hours), and Washington, D.C. (4.5 hours) there are plenty of opportunities for cultural excursions to museums and galleries.

The ECU photography area is a regional hub for photographic education. We recently underwent a major remodeling and construction of the facilities, investing more than $270,000 in our darkrooms, archival room, and alternative process facilities.

We believe in the importance of providing a comprehensive learning experience with exposure to the rich range of tools our medium has to offer, from 19th century techniques to the newest digital technologies. We provide our students with a subject-appropriate balance of technical mastery, a historical and contemporary understanding of theory and practice, and the development of written and spoken art vernacular. We encourage our students to be skillful makers of meaningful visual experiences.
