BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE ANALYST

Job Description: The business intelligence analyst reports primarily to the Director of Institutional Research and secondarily to the Associate Provost for Institutional Planning, Assessment, & Research (IPAR). The business intelligence analyst assumes responsibility for assignments that support the planning, assessment, and research functions in IPAR; the scope of the position extends from IPAR to the entire University community. The BI Analyst plays a key role in UNC System Student Data Mart submissions as well as data management, data integration, and data analysis/reporting at the University.

The person in this position will be a key member of ECU's Student Data Mart team. The Student Data Mart (SDM) is a data warehouse at the system office of The University of North Carolina. His/her responsibilities will include collaborating with Information Technology and Computer Services personnel to apply upgrades to the data mart, with the registrar's office to monitor error reports, with other functional offices to troubleshoot incorrect or missing data, and otherwise act to ensure "clean" data feeds and accurate SDM submissions.

Data management will be an integral component of this position and will include creating and maintaining crosswalks and code descriptions; developing and/or consulting on reporting views in ECU's data warehouse; and working with ITCS to schedule data "freezes." The person in this position will help ensure data integrity, and help maintain and manage the current data structure.

The person in this position will be required to integrate data from various sources to develop and maintain a coherent system of institutional knowledge and information. S/he will write SQL queries to gather and combine data and to document data location and methods used for data extraction. S/he will work with large complex data sets, merge current with historical records, and develop programming logic that can be deployed and repeated to extract, translate, and load data into various systems.

The person in this position will create BI reports and serve as a member of the IPAR team responsible for creating these reports. In report creation, s/he will interpret and make meaning of data and contextualize them for institutional decision making, thus presenting complex information in forms that are understandable to a variety of audiences. The person in this position will be asked to develop an extensive understanding of the underlying data used to build BI applications at ECU and develop complex reports on University performance metrics, which may include the merging of disparate data elements (e.g., student, faculty, facilities, and financial data). Along with other Institutional Research staff, the person in this position will fill various ad hoc requests, especially those requiring complex programming skills. S/he will compare consistency of data against other data sources and establish automated procedures for data manipulation, analysis, and report processes.

In addition to the preceding duties, the person in this position will cultivate positive and productive relationships with other departments and demonstrate creativity in recommending solutions for user reporting needs. S/he will represent ECU to the system office and represent IPAR on various campus committees. S/he will maintain SharePoint sites for Institutional Research as well as other software used for data request functions. The person in this position is continually vigilant in assuring that policies and procedures related to data privacy and security are strictly enforced.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline such as computer science, management information systems, or information technology; or a bachelor's degree in a non-technical field with two or more years of relevant work experience.
Strong knowledge of SQL and ability to write complex SQL queries.
Experience working with enterprise-level relational databases.
Strong project management skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences and explain technical information in a clear and understandable manner.
