FOUNDATIONAL SCIENCES FACULTY MEMBER

Job Description: The ECU SoDM curriculum involves a series of integrated foundational biological science courses that present the study of human systems across traditional disciplines; the normal and abnormal functions are studied as part of systems.

The faculty member will bring expertise in one or more of the following scientific disciplines: neurobiology, immunology, and/or genetics as part of a larger foundational sciences instruction team.

The position will report to the Division Director of Basic Sciences within the Department of Foundational Sciences. In addition, the incumbent will work with faculty and staff in the Brody School of Medicine as well as with the chair of the department.

Specific duties include:

Coordination of the course components and competencies related to neurobiology or immunology, and/or genetics taught in the School of Dental Medicine curriculum. 

Active participation in the editing current content and developing new materials involved in the delivery of instruction. This includes manuals, references, and presentation media. 

Active participation in the developing and editing of content involved in the evaluation of student outcomes. This includes exams and Case Based Learning (CBL). 

Active participation in the student evaluation of faculty and their basic science instruction.

Working closely with the Associate Dean for Dental Education and Informatics in curriculum development and implementation with respect to the specific topics in basic science as related to health care in general, and dentistry in particular.

Work closely with the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics and other informatics personnel to optimize the use of technology to support the department's teaching programs.

Conduct research, and other scholarly activities that will help qualify for appropriate promotion.

Supervise and mentor graduate and professional students in research.

Preparation of accreditation and other program documentation and reports, as needed.

Seeking to serve on committees and boards for state/federal government agencies, professional societies and within the school and university.

Attending meetings and representing the school in internal and external venues as requested by the Chair of Foundational Sciences and/or Division Director of Basic Sciences.

Representing the School to external constituencies as appropriate.

Performing other duties and assuming additional responsibilities as assigned by the Chair of Foundational Sciences, Division Director of Basic Sciences, or the Dean.

This is a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher.


Minimum Qualifications: Required qualifications

Candidates must have a doctoral degree (either or PhD, DDS or DMD, or MD) from an appropriately accredited institution, with training in one or more of the following disciplines: neurobiology, immunology, and/or genetics.

Evidence of experience in teaching in higher education.

Commitment to conducting basic, transitional and/or clinical research, and other scholarly activities that will help qualify for appropriate promotion.
