ASSOCIATE DEAN OF STUDENTS

Job Description: The Associate Dean of Students and Director of Safety and Student Services provides leadership, supervision and direction to student affairs personnel in the areas of safety and student services, as well as threat management. The Associate Dean of Students and Director of Safety and Student Services provides leadership with university initiatives and support services that enhance the student experience and promote the personal development and academic success of the students at East Carolina University. The Associate Dean and Director of Safety and Student Services will engage members of the university in complex problem solving and advise faculty, staff, students and parents on sensitive and private issues. The Associate Dean and Director of Safety and Student Services will provide leadership for university threat management initiatives and advise the appropriate University committee or office regarding students who present other potential safety issues. The Associate Dean of Students and Director of Safety and Student Services will partner with various Student Affairs units to develop and facilitate programs and services that integrate and enhance the student experience at East Carolina University.

The Associate Dean of Students and Director of Safety and Student Services is the liaison for the following areas: all student service areas including counseling, student health, disability support services, individual student crisis management, admissions, registration, orientation, financial aid, academic support services, university polices, and other areas deemed necessary to support student needs. The Associate Dean of Students and Director for Safety and Student Services provides students with referral information, as well as implements and maintains a system for follow-up with students who have been referred to campus and community resources.

The Associate Dean of Students and Director for Safety and Student Services will work collaboratively and proactively with faculty within the colleges and schools at ECU to manage threats to the University community. The Associate Dean will provide referrals and guidance, as well as advise faculty and staff regarding the protocol for handling a threatening situation.


Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate must have a Master's degree in student development, counseling or related field, with demonstrated experience in counseling, advising and student learning theory, strong organizational and administrative skills, strong interpersonal communication skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, team building skills, the ability to build positive and effective relationships across the campus and community, a strong commitment to diversity, the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, the ability to manage multiple tasks, be able to work evenings and weekends (as needed), have knowledge of legal issues in higher education, and have the ability to provide exemplary customer service. The candidate must also have significant experience with crisis and threat management, and experience interacting with the public, parents, students, faculty and staff.
