DENTAL - ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR CLINICAL AFFAIRS

Job Description: The Office of Clinical Affairs of the School of Dental Medicine at East Carolina University is responsible for all aspects of clinical activities of the school. This office works in close collaboration with the School's Offices of Extramural Clinical Practices; Student Affairs; Academic Success; Research; Dental Education and Informatics; Educational Support and Faculty Development; and Business and Financial Affairs and the Departments of Surgical Sciences; Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics; General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences to support the School's programs and initiatives. In addition, the Office of Clinical Affairs works closely with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and local/regional health care facilities to provide information and services related to clinical affairs.

The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs (ADCA) provides strategic leadership, oversight, and management for the School in the areas related to the School's clinical pre-doctoral, clinical residency, faculty practice and clinical research programs. The ADCA provides administrative support for the clinical activities in anticipation and response to the ongoing and evolving needs of modern dental students, residents, staff, faculty and patients. The ADCA maintains a strong supportive relationship with other administrators, faculty, staff, residents and students to provide a mission focus, and to ensure compliance with accreditation standards and the state and federal education, healthcare, and safety regulations related to the School's clinical facilities and clinical operations.

The ADCA oversees the activities of the Director of Clinics, who is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Ross Hall clinics. In addition, the ADCA works closely with the Assistant Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices (ADECP), the Director of the General Practice Residency (GPR) program, the Director of the Pediatric Dentistry residency program, and the Director of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program to ensure that the Community Service Learning Centers (CSLCs) and other external clinical sites managed by the ECU School of Dental Medicine comply with all rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Any variations must be in writing and approved through the Dean's Executive Council (DEC).

As Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, this position qualifies as a Senior Academic and Administrative Officer. The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs has substantial independence of administrative authority and discretion in all areas of responsibility. This position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Dental Medicine at East Carolina University.

The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs will be considered for a tenured academic appointment with a senior rank in the School of Dental Medicine in a Department appropriate to the individual's qualifications.


Minimum Qualifications: DDS or DMD degree (or Equivalent) from a CODA Accredited Dental School

Eligible for licensure in North Carolina

Comprehensive clinical skills

Broad knowledge of issues in dental education

A minimum of seven years of experience in dental education at the institutional level, working in development, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of a clinical educational program leading to a dental degree

Demonstrated experience in directing large dental clinical operations, dental school clinical affairs or service as a clinical department chair

Commitment to a generalist model of dental education

Candidates should possess outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, and have a record of consensus building in an academic setting. This individual must have ability to quickly respond to requests with accuracy, reliability, and flexibility; this will frequently include assembling the right team of people to match the request that is presented.
