COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
  • Salary Range: $3,696 to $4,493 per month (2018/19 Salary Schedule); maximum initial placement at $4,075 per month (placement within this range is based on assessment of previous experience as documented in application materials). In addition to the base salary, candidates will also be entitled to a 5% shift differential for applicable hours.
  • Fringe Benefits: The District offers a competitive health & benefits package for employees and eligible dependents (benefits are pro-rated for part-time employees).
  • Leave/Holiday Time: Full-time classified members earn 8 hours of sick leave and start off accruing 6.67 hours of vacation for each month worked (accrual rate increases after third year of employment and rates are pro-rated for part-time employees). Employees are also compensated for holidays recognized by the District (14 holidays/year, pro-rated for part-time employees).

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Petaluma Campus of Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking a qualified individual with demonstrated grounds maintenance and gardening skills to join an outstanding maintenance team to provide high quality services to our district, our community, and most importantly to our students. Under general supervision, performs grounds maintenance and gardening work in keeping with District-wide sustainability efforts; and performs related work as required. This is a full-time, 12 months per year Classified position. Generally, the work assignment and schedule will be on the Petaluma Campus, Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval.

SCOPE:
The Groundskeeper I performs various grounds-keeping duties of moderate complexity; assists in training and directing the work of student assistants.

DEPARTMENT/CAMPUS DESCRIPTION
The Facilities Operations Department is responsible for building and grounds repair and maintenance, fleet management, energy management, custodial services, and coordination and oversight of District-wide repair, remodel, and new construction projects (these responsibilities encompass all District-wide sites and properties). The department is organized into four separate divisions: Buildings and Equipment Maintenance, Grounds, Custodial, and Administration, and consists of approximately 55 full-time staff.
The SRJC Petaluma Campus currently enrolls nearly 6,000 students in credit and non-credit courses. Each semester, approximately 350 course sections in nearly 60 disciplines are offered, including many majors and certificates as well as courses necessary for transfer to UC, CSU, or to complete SRJC's local AA/AS degrees. SRJC has been offering courses in the Petaluma area for over 50 years; in 1995 permanent facilities on the current 40 acre site were completed. In 2008, SRJC tripled the square footage of the campus with an extensive expansion and remodel project. Among the new facilities are life sciences labs, a second art studio, physical science labs, a 35,000 square foot library, a physical fitness center, a bookstore, student services and support areas (including student health services, student life and leadership, admissions and records, counseling, disabled student services, tutorial center, and career/transfer center), expanded dining space, classrooms/technology labs, faculty/administrative offices, digital media lab, and a 256-seat auditorium with some of the best media technology in the District. The campus offers state-of-the-art technology throughout, including a wireless network, fully mediated instructional facilities, and video-conferencing capabilities. Other unique features of the Petaluma Campus include the Capri Creek restoration project, community and permaculture gardens, sustainable design, and an accessible pedestrian and bike trail system with a route that extends around the perimeter of the campus and continues throughout the city of Petaluma. Some of the unique program offerings on the Petaluma Campus are the fall and spring Cinema Series, annual LumaFest community education fair and open house, Veterinary Technology certificate, Digital Media certificate, Water Utility Operations certificates, CISCO Networking certification in CCNA, IT Support certificate, and Fitness, Nutrition and Health certificate. The campus is also host to SRJC's Gateway to College Academy, a middle college program for students earning college credits while working towards a high school diploma; a bustling Intercultural Center; and several learning communities. SRJC Petaluma has more than 40 full-time faculty and 150 adjunct faculty members who enjoy interdisciplinary collaborations with their colleagues. Our faculty fully utilize the campus as an indoor/outdoor learning environment. SRJC Petaluma offers students a full complement of Student Services with a mission is to "Welcome, guide, and engage" students. This beautiful campus is located only 35 miles north of San Francisco.



Examples of Duties:
Examples of key duties are interpreted as being descriptive and not restrictive in nature. Incumbents routinely perform approximately 80% of the duties below.
  1. Plants, weeds, rakes and waters college grounds; transplants and mulches as necessary.
  2. Prunes annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees using the appropriate techniques according to the plant, location & soil conditions.
  3. Appropriately edges, mows, fertilizes lawns, and monitors the watering needs of the grounds; ensures efficient operation of irrigation systems.
  4. Sets scheduling of irrigation time clocks for a water-efficient irrigation schedule.
  5. Implements landscape improvement/renovation projects using appropriate plants and landscape materials.
  6. Calculates amounts and applies pesticides according to industry safety procedures; understands and follows material safety data sheets and labels and required emergency treatments for specific chemicals.
  7. Identifies common landscape weeds and other pest issues and applies control measures.
  8. Maintains fountains, college pathways and roads; patches pot holes, cleans drains and ditches, and sweeps debris.
  9. Uses leaf blowers, turfvacs, other tools or hands to remove trash and debris from grounds.
  10. Operates power equipment such as, but not limited to, edger, hedge trimmers, chain saws, and tractor/loaders as necessary.
  11. Sets up college stadium and athletic field for sporting events; assists with marking athletic fields.
  12. Assists in the custodial maintenance of college stadium including athletic field and bathrooms after events.
  13. Performs minor repairs to fences, benches, trash and recycling bins as well as equipment and irrigation sprinklers; installs and maintains drip irrigation systems; may repair impact sprinkler heads in lawn.
  14. Assists with the recycling and composting programs.
  15. Provides assistance and materials, including floral arrangements, for specials events, meetings and classes.
  16. May maintain flowers and plant material in lathe house.
  17. May dispose of dead animals and arrange for rescue of injured animals; performs vector control.
  18. Directs the work of and trains student assistants.



Minimum Qualifications:
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

ABILITY TO:
Operate hand and power tools used in gardening and grounds-keeping work safely; perform skilled grounds maintenance work; perform physical labor; follow and give oral and written instructions; work safely and effectively around the public; plan and prioritize duties using good judgment; maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for, a diverse population.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Methods, supplies, equipment and tools used in planting, cultivating, and caring for lawns, shrubs, annuals and perennials, and trees; plant identification and cultivation requirements; plant pest/disease problems; installation and repair of irrigation systems (drip and automatic); computer software programs, including Microsoft Outlook, service request systems and irrigation software; and programming of irrigation time clocks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates/incumbents must meet the minimum qualifications as detailed below, or file for equivalency. Equivalency decisions are made on the basis of a combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. If requesting consideration on the basis of equivalency, an Equivalency Application is required at the time of interest in a position (equivalency decisions are made by Human Resources, in coordination with the department where the vacancy exists, if needed.)

REQUIRED EDUCATION:
  • Graduation from high school.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Demonstrated experience in performing gardening and grounds-keeping duties.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Maintaining large grounds.
  • Experience in an higher education setting.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
This classification requires the use of a personal or District vehicle while conducting District business. Must possess a valid (Class C) California driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATE:
  • Qualified Applicator Certificate issued by California Department of Pesticide Regulation.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking. Frequently required to work under inclement weather conditions. Must be able to work in an environment containing frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to operate a variety of gas powered equipment and sharpen hand tools safely.
