AFRICAN STUDIES PROGRAM ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR OPERATIONS


Position Summary:
The African Studies Program(ASP) supports research, teaching, and outreach at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, bringing together scholars in multiple disciplines, students, teachers, and community partners to consider all aspects of land and life in Africa. The African Studies Program organizes a weekly seminar series, hosts an annual academic conference, supports and organizes a variety of academic programming and special events, provides awards and fellowships for Africanist students and faculty, hosts the Mandela Washington Fellowship, manages a robust K-12 outreach program, and supports many other activities on campus and in the community that further our organizational mission.

The African Studies Program is a U. S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center for Africa and a member of the campus consortium of internationally oriented programs known as the Institute for Regional and International Studies (IRIS), a unit of the International Division

Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelors degree required. Area-specific (Africa) knowledge preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:
Excellent organizational and project management skills
Demonstrated success planning and managing large events
Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information and excellent professional judgement
Superior professional English writing skills
Computer proficiency, experience working with databases and spreadsheets and relevant software such as Excel, Asana, Google Drive, and Adobe products.
Demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people such as faculty, students, staff, international visitors, and the public.
Experience in higher education administration preferred
Prior communications experience and/or relevant design skills preferred.
Overseas life experience, research, or study abroad experience in Africa highly desirable.
French, Arabic, or other African language skills desired.

Additional Information:
The employment title will be Associate Administrative Specialist. The position will be a 12-month Annual-basis fixed-term renewable appointment at 100% time. Continuation of the position is expressly dependent on job performance and continued external funding. This position requires domestic travel 3-5 times per year, and occasional night and weekend work for special events.
