Position/Job Summary

Ithaca College invites applications for the position of Assistant Counsel with primary responsibility for employment law and related agency matters.

Located in one of America's top college towns, Ithaca College, in Ithaca, NY, boasts a lively and sophisticated residential college community of 6,200 undergraduate and 470 graduate students that takes full advantage of its stunning natural backdrop - Cayuga Lake, waterfalls, and gorges - and a local community rich in arts and culture.

The Office of the General Counsel at Ithaca College provides comprehensive legal services to the College and is comprised of the Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary to the Board of Trustees, and two Assistant Counsel positions. One Assistant Counsel has primary responsibility for student affairs and related agency matters, and the other Assistant Counsel has primary responsibility for employment law and related agency matters. The two Assistant Counsel positions share responsibility for the review of contracts and other matters of the College.

Under the general direction and supervision of the Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary to the Board of Trustees, the Assistant Counsel is responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice and services to the College, with primary responsibility for employment law and related agency matters, and shared responsibility with the other Assistant Counsel for the review of contracts and other matters of the College.

Position/Job Responsibilities

1. Provide counsel and legal services to the College on a wide range of legal issues; research, review and perform analysis of laws and regulations as they relate to policy and procedures and the education of the College community. Remain current on applicable state and federal laws and regulations impacting the College.
2. Review and evaluate proposed and existing federal, state and local legislation and regulations affecting the College and advise appropriate departments about compliance, particularly with employment law. Participate in the development of policies and procedures necessary to advance the College's mission in a way that also satisfies compliance requirements set by the College, regulatory agencies and governmental entities.
3. Provide training and educational programming for faculty, staff, administrators, and students to support a culture of innovation and compliance with College policy and state and federal laws and regulations. These include but are not limited to institutional compliance with the ADA , sexual harassment, fair employment practices, and diversity in the workplace.
4. Serve as the College liaison with state and federal agencies, particularly regarding employment law matters. Prepare College responses to complaints and inquiries filed with or by federal and state agencies, particularly regarding employment law matters.
5. Prepare, review, revise and interpret a variety of legal documents, policies, contracts and instruments; draft and provide legal opinions and advice.
6. Prepare, review and negotiate contracts involving leases, licenses, purchases, insurance, employment, research and other matters.
7. Collaborate with institutional leadership in providing direction with respect to the development of a campus climate that values and respects diversity, equity, inclusion, and full participation.
8. Assist the Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary to the Board of Trustees in handling a wide range of legal and other issues.

Position/Job Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
A law degree from an ABA -accredited law school;
Admission to the New York State Bar within one year of starting work;
Licensed and in good standing to practice law in any U.S. jurisdiction;
Minimum of 2 years of related professional legal experience (subject to waiver for exceptionally relevant experience);
Impeccable written, interpersonal, organizational, and verbal communication skills and the highest level of attention to detail;
Self-motivated and demonstrated ability to take initiative and to multi-task, adapt to changing priorities and meet deadlines;
Curiosity, creativity, patience, calm demeanor under pressure, and willingness to learn new areas of the law;
Demonstrated ability to work independently and perform duties with a high level of professionalism, follow-through, flexibility, discretion, judgment, accuracy, diplomacy and tact;
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population, to cultivate an inclusive, diverse and welcoming environment, and to treat all people equitably in a culturally competent manner.

Preferred Qualifications:
Licensed in good standing to practice law in New York (or immediately eligible for admission on motion/reciprocity to practice law in New York);
4 years of related professional legal experience;
Experience practicing higher education law;
Experience as in-house counsel at an institution of higher education (including higher education law fellows);
Demonstrated experience in management-side employment law;
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with applicable New York laws.
