Description of the Job
Massage therapists treat clients by using touch to manipulate the soft-tissues of the body. With their touch, therapists relieve pain, help rehabilitate injuries, improve circulation, relieve stress, increase relaxation, and aid in the general wellness of clients.

Required Qualifications
Required Licensure or Certification(s):
• Licensure as a massage therapist ( LMT ) in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• 500 hours education from an approved school accredited by the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Current Certification in CPR / AED & First Aid Certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross are preferred).

Physical Requirements:
• Moderate physical activity
• Requires handling of average-weight objects and standing/walking for a minimum of four (4) hours per day

Candidate to perform responsibilities at varied VCU / VCHS locations. Travel between facilities may be required.

Additional Information
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE :

Massage Program:
• Massage and knead muscles and soft tissues of the body to provide treatment for medical conditions, injuries, or wellness maintenance.
• Confer with clients about their medical histories and problems with stress or pain to determine how massage will be most helpful.
• Interview patients to gather medical information.
• Maintain confidential records which may include medical and treatment information.
• Assess clients' soft tissue condition, joint quality and function, muscle strength, and range of motion.
• Assess physical conditions of patients to aid in diagnosis or treatment.
• Provide clients with guidance and information about techniques for postural improvement and stretching, strengthening, relaxation, and rehabilitative exercises.
• Develop and propose client treatment plans that specify which types of massage are to be used.
• Refer clients to other types of health and fitness professionals when necessary.
• Prepare and blend oils and apply the blends to clients' skin.
• Schedule appointments.
• Clean all supplies.
• Restock supplies and resources for sessions.
• Conduct up to 90 minute effective table massage sessions for clients.
• Provide chair/table back massages for customized programs, special events, or special marketing promotions as assigned.

Customer Service:
• Maintain professionalism during all massage sessions.
• Provide quality customer service to all clients and potential clients, and respecting the diversity of our membership.
• Adapt teaching approaches to the age, experience and ability of participants.
• Ensure the health and safety of the participants by making sure all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards.
• Communicate regularly with participants, as appropriate, to ensure they are aware of progress.
• Treat clients in professional settings on or off campus.

Program Promotion and Public Relations:
• Market their program at on campus and off campus events.

General Administration:
• Report facility and safety equipment issues.
• Assist with other wellness programming needs.
• Attend all Massage Therapy and Wellness Program staff meetings.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Enforce all department and program policies and procedures as it pertains to the massage therapy program.
• Enforce all building policies and procedures, and assist as needed during emergencies.
