At least ten years of professional experience in student affairs with progressive leadership and supervisory responsibilities is required.

The Dean will be a student affairs professional with deep and relevant experience who has a passion for working closely with students and a commitment to social justice. The successful candidate will be a visionary and collaborative leader whose commitment to innovation and university-wide partnerships will enhance the delivery of services to all students. The Dean will be experienced with the assessment of learning outcomes; the complex legal and legislative environment that informs the work of the component offices; and will be an advocate for advancing cultural diversity as an element of inclusive excellence in student affairs. The Dean of Students will be a proven collaborator with a deep appreciation for excellence in education as well as the networking and entrepreneurial skills required to work successfully with a wide range of individuals and constituencies across multiple organizations. They will demonstrate the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:

Position Summary:
The Dean of Students is a senior administrator in Student Affairs, a member of the Vice Chancellor's leadership team, and assists in planning, implementation and assessment of strategic initiatives related to student success. The Dean of Students reports to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. As an advocate for student needs, the Dean has a leadership role in fostering the creation and maintenance of a multicultural and diverse institution that honors and celebrates diversity and encourages the success of all students. The University relies on the Dean of Students and designated units to advance policies and programs aimed at positive student development and to provide urgent response and problem-solving services to students and to other staff and faculty working with students.

With a budget of approximately $11.5 million and approximately 40 staff members, the Dean of Students provides leadership in administering a comprehensive range of programs and services designed to support student success at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Offices and programs reporting to the Dean of Students at this time include:

* Dean of Students Office (student support and welfare, case management, students of concern, crisis support, bias response, behavioral intervention, threat assessment)
* Center for First-Year Experience (orientation, transfer programs, inclusion education, academic engagement)
* Associated Students of Madison (student government body)
* Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards

As a result of the 2017-2018 decision by Chancellor Rebecca Blank to establish a Vice Chancellor level position dedicated to student affairs, the division was elevated to Cabinet level status. Vice Chancellor Lori Reesor began her role in July 2018 and shortly thereafter began the process of restructuring the component offices and services to best meet the needs of current and future University of Wisconsin-Madison students. Candidates for the positon of Dean of Students should be aware that the final form of the organizational structure, particularly related to the component departments, is under discussion and may be further adjusted to achieve the optimal staffing pattern. It is expected that the next Dean of Students will participate in conversations about the structure and remain mindful of the evolving needs of students, the University, and the division in determining the structure.

The Dean of Students will have the opportunity to play a transformational role in refining a best-practice student affairs program to enhance the quality of the campus experience for a talented, diverse, and ambitious population of undergraduate, graduate and professional students at one of the nation's leading universities. The Dean will be expected to embrace the spirit of continuous assessment and improvement and contribute to the development of the organizational model for Student Affairs. Within this context, the Dean will be asked to contribute to the following priorities among others:

* Lead the newly defined Dean of Students portfolio
* Lead the efforts of the University in matters of student crisis and emergency
* Advance the University's and Student Affairs' diversity, inclusion, and social justice goals
* Represent the interests of students
