Insulation Technician

INSULATION TECHNICIAN*

DAYS OFF: SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Under general supervision performs skilled and semi-skilled work at the journeyman level in the insulation trade and removal of asbestos containing materials in University buildings. This includes inspection, replacement, installation, maintenance, and repair of insulation as well as removal of asbestos containing materials such as floor and ceiling tiles and pipe insulation as part of an asbestos abatement program. Performs remediation of mold and fungus in University buildings, building materials, including concrete, dry wall, carpeting, wall paper, fiber board, ceiling tiles, and thermal insulation.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
  • Installs insulation on boilers, steam and water lines, valves, water tanks, heat exchangers, electrical cables, ducts and other systems that require insulating; will work with fiber glass or other insulating materials.
  • Repairs the insulation on existing systems; removes damaged asbestos containing materials or other insulating material and replaces with new insulation.
  • Encapsulates existing asbestos coverings.
  • Performs mold and fungus remediation.
  • Performs maintenance inspections (as it pertains to the trade) of facilities on a continuing basis.
  • Receives direction from Senior Insulation Technician, Facilities Management and/or the Environmental Health & Safety Department or designee in order to perform hazardous material installations, removals and/or remediation work.
  • Loads, transports, and unloads asbestos at landfill; obtains appropriate documentation and authorization for disposal of asbestos materials.
  • Uses computer to access e-mail; receive work instructions, and other administrative information to include electronic payroll forms.
  • Communicates daily using a two-way radio and/or pager in order to respond to work-related routine and emergency information.
  • Ensures shop equipment is in proper working condition.
  • Performs housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, uncluttered, and safe work environment.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.


ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:
  • The primary physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in both extreme heat and cold conditions, as well as conditions that are wet/humid, dry and during times when temperatures are below 32 F for more that one-hour periods.
  • Employee must lift, tug, pull, and transport, with or without assistance, both small and heavy materials.
  • The employee is required to bend, squat, stretch and stand and/or work in cramped areas and/or confined space areas for prolonged periods of times.
  • Environment may frequently include dust and/or airborne particles and occasionally loud noise, electricity/high voltage, chemicals, gases, fumes, and vibration. For this reason, employee is required to wear designated personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to: ANSI-approved safety eyewear, hardhats, gloves, hearing protection, full face shield, and footwear to prevent exposures to hazardous materials, noise dust and/or airborne particles.
  • Must be able to wear designated respirator when required as part of the personal protective equipment.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and piping systems.
  • Working knowledge of use, care, and safe handling of tools, equipment, and materials commonly used in the trade.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance of equipment, systems and manual tasks.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in order to meet the needs of the unit and its customers.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Interpersonal skills with ability to interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.


REQUIRED MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Minimum four (4) years journeyman experience as an insulator.
  • Experience with asbestos abatement/insulation work.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • With or without assistance, requires the ability to routinely move, lift, and/or carry equipment, parts and job related materials exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders up to 40 ft., work from scaffolding and high areas using appropriate harness and tether equipment, and used ramps and aerial lift devices above ground.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license in order to drive University of Delaware's vehicles to and from job sites.
  • Must possess and maintain a Delaware Asbestos Supervisor Certification or have the ability to obtain the same within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • Must pass initial and annual physical examinations for general health status (pulmonary test and chest x-ray).
  • Must be capable of being fitted with all types of respirators.
  • Must attend a mold training/awareness course for encapsulating and removal of mold containing materials.
